Ivan Reitman Says ‘Ghostbusters’ Spinoff Rumors “Just Noise”
  |  @   |

Recently screenwriter Drew Pearce opened up about laying out the groundwork for a possible mixed gendered Ghostbusters. The Iron Man 3 scribe confirmed that if Sony were to follow through on his Ghostbusters “bible” it would take place in the same universe as the one Paul Feig is directing now. Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt are among the frontrunners to star in the film, with hopes that Anthony and Joe Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) will direct.

At first it looked like the film wasn’t even going to happen, with Tatum’s people saying that they’re “not doing that any more,” and Pratt revealing in an interview that such talks were BS. So Pearce’s quotes gave us slight hope that the film is still on.

Now Ivan Reitman, the director of the first two Ghostbusters and a producer of Feig’s reboot, has come out to address these rumors saying that Feig’s is the only new movie in the franchise they are currently working on, and that anything else is just noise. Check out his full quote below.

Reitman released a statement (via EW) on the subject of the Ghostbusters spinoff rumors:

“There has been a lot of excitement recently about what is happening with the Ghostbusters franchise. As the producer of the new Ghostbusters film, I feel the need to clarify. There is only one new Ghostbusters movie and that is the Paul Feig directed version coming next July, presently filming and going fantastically. The rest is just noise.”

Rumors of a spinoff started to emerge earlier this year. So based on Reitman’s statement, he is doing some backtracking. Back in March he talked about how expansive the Ghostbusters universe would be with “different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment.”

The filmmaker even went into great detail talking about who would be involved, and when the next films would start shooting:

“Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”

Reitman may have spoken about the future of the Ghostbusters franchise prematurely, which happens very often. Though talks of sequels are commonplace, especially when it comes to a brand like this one, the studio is waiting to see how the audience will react to Feig’s vision of the reboot. The director is certainly going in a different direction by casting an all-female cast and making the film more scary. But that refreshing take may just be the thing the franchise needs to reboot. If the film is up to or even exceeds the studio’s expectations, it’s very likely they will want to get a sequel into production as soon as possible.
