Spider-Man is coming home in a very big way. He won’t be doing any webslinging on his own until 2017, but he will make his Marvel Cinematic debut in Captain America: Civil War. However, the problem with having a second reboot in nearly ten years, is the notion that they will have to repeat the same origins story all over again. Of course, that can get tiresome, and would probably turn audiences away from seeing the solo feature. However, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have confirmed that their script won’t have Peter Parker go through the same motions to become Spider-Man. In fact, the two reveal that their Spider-Man is an already established hero.

More on the story below.

First, the Captain America: Civil War cameo news. Superhero Hype reports that Daley and Goldstein will go to Marvel Studios this weekend, to look at footage of Tom Holland as Spider-Man in the Captain America sequel.

“We hear good things. We might even get to look at the Spidey suit, which is exciting.”

So far Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei are the only ones cast in the film, and the two had to dispel the casting rumors that have been floating on the web,

“We’ve discussed certain characters,” said Daley, “but nothing is certain yet, for sure.”

When Daley and Goldstein were confirmed as the writers of the reboot, they addressed how this Spider-Man would be different from the previous ones we have seen. “He’s a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he’s an outcast and a geek through humor,” says Daley. While on their Vacation promotional tour, the two were kind enough to offer some insight about writing Spider-Man to Grantland’s The Andy Greenwald Podcast, and confirm that the reboot won’t be an origins story.

“I think that everybody feels like you know he got bit by a spider and you know Uncle Ben died, and we probably don’t need to revisit that.”

Many felt hesitant about seeing another Spider-Man origins story, shortly after Sony cancelled Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4, and decided to do another reboot with Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield. We all know how that turned out. But with Sony now sharing Spider-Man with Marvel, the stakes are raised. The webslinger now has to be a part of universe bigger than his own, or at least bigger than the one Sony had attempted to do.

On numerous occasions, producer Kevin Feige has talked about how this Peter Parker will focus on the hero’s life as a high school student, and would be the youngest one we have ever seen. The film will emphasize how Parker must find the delicate balance between being a student and being a superhero.

“We have a meeting set up at the end of the week just to go over the logistics and to look at his suit, which will be fun. But we’re so pumped about it and Marvel seems to be doing everything right; we’re both such huge fans of the stuff they’re putting out. I think it’ll be a fun departure from the Peter Parker you’ve seen, where now he is truly a kid and I think the stakes are increased in that his struggle through high school is very real and isn’t just a sort of side note; it matters now.”

The two then got into the Parker’s personality as both a superhero and a high school student,

“We want to explore the fact that just because you get superpowers doesn’t make you into a really sophisticated, successful adult. He’s still a kid and he’s clumsy and he’s a geek and he’s a bit of an outcast, and in many ways the superpowers amplify that and exacerbate his trying to fit in.”

Now it’s important to note that Daley and Goldstein haven’t even begun to write the script for the Spider-Man reboot. As aforementioned, the film has only cast Holland and Tomei. We don’t even know if the film will revisit the relationship between Parker and Gwen Stacy, or if they will go with Mary Jane Watson as a love interest instead.

Captain America: Civil War is due out May 6th, 2016. Directed by Jon Watts, the Spider-Man reboot opens on July 28th, 2017.
