Colin Trevorrow Talks ‘Jurassic World 2’ Plot

The success of Jurassic World has opened the door for bold new possibilities for the franchise. Though director Colin Trevorrow confirms he won’t be making a return trip for a sequel, he will be writing it. However, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will return to reprise their roles. With the film still out in theaters, the director isn’t quite done making the press rounds to promote the film, and has even gone as far as talking about the sequel.

Universal has already dated Jurassic World 2 (or to some Jurassic Park 5) for a June 22nd, 2018 release, and while some may think it may be too early to go into the plot in great detail, Trevorrow is talking about how it may be more than just a film about “dinosaurs chasing people on an island.”

More on the story below.

Trevorrow spoke to Wired UK about how the story will evolve after the events of Jurassic World:

“[It will not be] just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island. That’ll get old real fast”¦I feel like the idea that this isn’t always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment. And when you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponize it and later on we found it could be used for energy. And this isn’t something necessarily that was in the book but is a seed that I wanted to plant in this movie, is that might be able to grow in more of these movies if they decide to make more of them, is: What if this went open source?

It’s almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?’ And Dr Wu says in the film, when he’s warning Dr Masrani, “˜We’re not always going to be the only ones who can make a dinosaur.’ I think that’s an interesting idea that even if we don’t explore fully in this film, there is room for this universe to expand. I shouldn’t use the word universe, because people will think we’re making a Jurassic World universe – we’re not.”

I really take comfort in knowing that the sequel could be more than just about people trying to outrun the dinosaurs on a remote island. Of course, The Lost World tried to have a T-Rex run amok in a highly populated area, which wasn’t that good of an idea – and wasn’t all well-received by audiences. However, if they can conceive a well-thought out idea, bringing a dinosaur into the city could work.

Now Trevorrow says maybe it will be about competitors who also want to exploit the dinosaurs for commercial and/or military use. This idea isn’t completely new considering we first saw Dennis from Jurassic Park try to sell dinosaur embryos to a competitor, trying to capitalize on Dr. Hammond’s ambition. Maybe the sequel could explore that in greater depth. The director also talks about using the dinosaurs for military applications, a plot that was explored in Jurassic World.

How much of these ideas actually make it into the sequel remains to be seen. We will keep you posted on any news.
