‘A Nightmare On Elm Street’ Reboot In The Works
  |  @   |

Five years ago, Platinum Dunes attempted to revive A Nightmare On Elm Street with a brand spanking new reboot for a younger generation. However, the film, starring Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Kruger, wasn’t very well-received by critics or audiences, and bombed at the box office. But when it comes to horror icons of those cheesy and campy slasher films of 80s, they do not stay dead for long.

New Line Cinema will once again be stirring up a few nightmares in an all new reboot of A Nightmare On Elm Street, which will reportedly ignore the damage that was done in the 2010 film.

More on the story below.

According to The Tracking Board, Orphan scribe David Leslie Johnson has been tapped to script. Toby Emmerich, Walter Hamada, and Dave Neustadter will oversee for New Line. No producer is on board, and no word yet on who the studio is looking at to direct the reboot. It’s not clear when the studio would like to start filming, but with this announcement, we can’t expect it to start lensing anytime soon.

The films are based on the 1984 horror film that spun numerous sequels, spinoffs, a TV series, and even a crossover film that centered on fight between Freddie Kruger and Jason Voorhees of Friday The 13th fame. The red and black sweater-wearing knife glove wielding freak of nature has even gone on to appear outside of the screen in several books, comic books, and a couple of video games.

According to the site, the studio is now going back to the drawing board, “working to create a remake worthy of the original.” A Nightmare On Elm Street wouldn’t be the first time that a slasher would have been remade. Recent remakes include Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Friday the 13th. Ironically, those films are getting remade once more.

Of course, depending on how successful any of these films are, we may or may not be getting a sequel. If the latter, just expect to hear of these slashers getting rebooted once more in the next couple of years, because apparently, that’s just the way things work around the industry.

So what are your thoughts on all these cheesy horror films being rebooted? Do you think these reboots will embrace their cheesy and campy tones, or will they go for the predictable grounded and dark theme?

  1. I can’t imagine any “Nightmare On Elm Street” reboot being successful. Robert Englund was the reason I watched the originals. I’m not saying the 68 year old actor would reprise his role (or should), I just feel that with out his charisma you’re left with the 2010 reboot. Now the Friday 13th reboot worked because Jason the character isn’t reliant on the actors performance as much.
Well I’m interested in how this will turn out, maybe it’s time I actually go and watch that 2010 reboot.
