Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese‘s longstanding relationship has lasted for five films, and now there is a new report that it will extend to six. Though Scorsese has a full slate of films that he is either reportedly attached to, or will most definitely work on, the director’s next project will be an adaptation of Devil in the White City, with DiCaprio set to play one of the real-life murderers. The Erik Larson novel, which blends meticulous research with a thrilling fictional narrative, is set during the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, where a serial killer masquerading as a doctor lures unsuspecting victims to a crematorium and gas chamber built on the fairgrounds.
More on the story below.
THR reports that DiCaprio will be playing H.H. Holmes, the faux doctor/serial killer. The story also has the real-life “Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair’s construction, in a short period of time was forced to overcome immense obstacles to construct the famous “White City” around which the fair was built.”
The long-gestating project was first being developed over Paramount, and had in fact, let go of the title twice, once in 2005, and a second time in 2007. But because of the period setting posing budgetary challenges, the studio was forced to release the project. It then landed in the hands of Warner Bros. At one point during the film’s development, Tom Cruise was to star and produce an adaptation, and later Kathryn Bigelow was attached to direct and produce.
DiCaprio and Scorsese previous collaborations include, The Aviator, Shutter Island, Gangs of New York, The Departed, and The Wolf Of Wall Street.
DiCaprio, who was attracted to the dark subject matter, then acquired the rights, and spent the last six years developing the film adaptation. Billy Ray (The Hunger Games, The Secrets In Their Eyes) will write the script.
Scorsese’s next film, Silence, is set for an undated 2016 release. The plan is for Devil In The White Dress to be his next directorial effort, despite being attached to directing a Ramones biopic and an adaptation of Kennenth Branagh’s telling of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
Here’s a description of the novel from Amazon,
