Having ran out of remakes, reboots, and sequels to cover (for the week), the gang at Screen Junkies pull a totally random Honest Trailer out today with 8 Mile, the Curtis Hanson directed 2002 semi-biopic of Eminem starring the rapper himself, Mekhi Phifer, the late Brittany Murphy and Oscar winner, Kim Basinger. Narrator Jon Bailey immediately pokes fun at the “true story” nature by saying that since Rabbit has brown hair, it’s totally different. One thing for sure, no one expected Eminem of all people to make the successful music star – actor transition especially after critical and box office flops like Mariah’s Glitter, and Brittney’s Crossroads.

Nobody thinks Rabbit can be successful in the mean streets of Detroit because he’s white…”Like Rosa Parks in reverse” is how Bailey describes it. So come to Detroit, where no one is safe… “from spontaneous freestyle rapping!” That one got me. Follow Eminem through his two dramatically different styles of emoting; no emotions, or ALL emotions. Watch him fight the “Cobra Kai” of rap, and go from rags to “slightly more confident rags.” Bailey gets some great one-liners in this one.

This is apparently the reason all my students yell “OOOOOOHHHH” because they do a lot of that in this movie. And be honest, “Lose Yourself” is on your workout mix, even though you really don’t know all the lines. I honestly prefer Weird Al’s parody “Couch Potato” about watching TV. Starring… Rapper Balboa (haha), middle fingers, and… holy shit, is that really Michael Shannon? Wow, I guess I really don’t remember this movie for anything more than the song at the end. New Title – simple and true, Eminem: The Movie.

Screen Junkies have 4.6 million subscribers on YouTube, and release a new Honest Trailer every Tuesday afternoon. 8 Mile is available on Amazon Instant for a $2.99 rental. It’s actually a really good movie, probably one of the better movies about modern music featuring a music star in the lead role.
