J.J. Abrams Confirms No New ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Footage At D23 Expo
  |  @   |

Disney skips San Diego Comic-Con every other year for their own mega Disney fan convention, the D23 Expo. Happening every odd year, the D23 Expo is an event that showcases everything about Disney, from their own studio, to Pixar, to Marvel, and now Lucasfilm. So with the studio notably absent from this year’s Comic-Con, one would think they would reserve all the new footage for their own panels, especially since Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, and Marvel weren’t there. The studio did, however, share some exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the Con, which did confirm a few things like Daisy Ridley’s Rey piloting the Millennium Falcon.

However, there is some unfortunate news to report. Even though Star Wars will have a presence at the D23 Expo this weekend, don’t expect to see any new footage or behind-the-scenes stuff during the live-action panel. More on this story below.

J.J. Abrams confirmed the sad news to EW, telling the entertainment magazine,

“It is true, we are showing no footage, behind the scenes or otherwise. In the fall, there’ll be a trailer.”

Well, there is some good news to come out of this, as the director does confirm that there will be a trailer coming in the fall, this after two teasers have been released. You can only keep the plot of the film a mystery for so long, so maybe this new fall trailer will provide some insight for the new saga. Although I’ve liked the marketing campaign for the film so far and the teasers are exciting to watch, the fact is that we still know so little about it. Because the fact is, everyone is going to want to watch a new Star Wars movie, and based on the reaction of the first two teasers, the less we know about it, the better. At least that’s my opinion.

Now, just because there will be no new footage to be revealed doesn’t mean they won’t show anything at all. Abrams does confirm they will be back at the Anaheim Convention Center, just a couple months after they had visited for Star Wars Celebration back in March. They of course could show the teasers and the behind-the-footage trailer again. Guardians of the Galaxy did a similar thing back in 2013, where they showed the SDCC sizzle reel.

While The Force Awakens director had some disappointing news to deliver, he makes no mention of Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. The first of many Star Wars spinoffs is currently filming, and while it may be too early to show some footage, we may get a chance to a very early and raw look at the production or they could just show the same teaser that they revealed at Star Wars Celebration earlier this year.
