Lady Death: Damnation Game Kickstarter

Guess who’s back?! Quickly following up on the success of his former Kickstarter campaign (seen here), Brian Pulido is ready to publish another Lady Death graphic novel! And not only is Pulido’s new graphic novel, Lady Death: Damnation Game already funded, but it’s quickly outpacing the last one. It’s an amazing time in the comic industry when any one of us can be directly involved in helping creators get their projects printed! The fact that it’s Lady Death doesn’t hurt at all.

When Brian Pulido contacted me, I was over the top excited. When he agreed to answer some questions for this Kickstarter Spotlight I almost literally jumped up and down with glee! I have been a fan of his Chaos! Comics characters since the nineties and it is nice to see him back in action with his iconic anti-heroine. As one of the original “bad girls” of the comics from her era, Lady Death has enjoyed widespread fame over the last two decades. But enough of the history, let’s talk about the current fundraising campaign!

This particular graphic novel will be forty-eight pages of “unapologetic, heavy metal inspired comics that kick your ass.” In this story, Lady Death attempts rescues an innocent boy from hell but finds herself embattled with the evil Hellwitch, denizen of a cursed city called Damnation. Her return to Hell makes her Public Enemy Number One and is bound to bring death and destruction down upon the heads of everyone involved. Why would she risk it all for this child’s soul? I guess we’ll both have to read the story to find out!

With the last Kickstarter raising five times the goal, there were loads of extras for the backers. This one is no different, less than a week into the campaign and over three times the original goal has been pledged. I asked Brian about the project goals and their success, this what he had to say:

Geeks of Doom: Seeing the massive success of your first Kickstarter, Chaos Rules, and the roaring success of this current one, does this cause you to expand or elevate your plans for upcoming comics or projects? You seem to have no trouble hitting your production goals.

Brian Pulido: Each time we hold our breath and are grateful for the response. We have two Kickstarters coming in the fall. They are:

Zack The Zombie Exterminator, a 96-page full color original graphic novel, which is a horror comedy about a family of heavy metal loving zombie exterminators in a world where the apocalypse never came. Zombies are pests and if you need grandpa disposed of, you call Zack. Throw a Romero flick in a blender with Wayne’s World and you have yourself Zack the Zombie Exterminator. Hillbillies, heavy metal, and undead decapitations””Zack has it all.

Next up is La Muerta, a 96-page full color original graphic novel. It flips the tone 180 degrees. Fewer laughs, but even more bloodshed. Muerta is a hyper violent revenge tale in the vein of the Death Wish, Columbiana, and Desperado. What makes it unique is a Southwestern setting full of noirish visuals steeped in Mexican American iconography. Gut-wrenching but beautiful.

GoD: Speaking of goals, the ones you set for both comics seem relatively modest. Is there a reason for the smaller goals?

BP: We are only asking for associated printing costs. We’ve covered the creative costs. If it goes over the funding goal, it is amazing!

How about that? With all the creative work finished, the team is focused on making sure the backers get exactly what they are promised. A great comic from a wonderful team! And speaking of team, it changed up a tad and I had to ask about that, of course.

GoD: I notice you have a different co-writer for this project. Do you change it up each time for creative purposes or is there another reason?

BP: My new co-writer Mike Maclean and I really clicked on a number of levels. Besides writing together, we’ve become good friends, so it seemed like a natural progression.

I normally delve into the details of the rewards for each campaign when I write these Spotlights up, but there are so many variant covers, special editions, and miscellaneous extras that I cannot possibly do justice to it all. Suffice to say that of the myriad of items available, there has got to be something for every Lady Death fan out there. Even if you cannot donate a large sum, they’ve got you covered. Rewards start at five dollars and go up slowly from there. I do want you to remember that there are stretch goals and several have been unlocked already, so if you pledge twenty bucks or more you will get extras! I was curious which rewards were more popular with backers, so I asked the Lady death creator that, too.

GoD: Of all the different rewards available to backers, which seems to get the greatest buy in? I haven’t seen such a variety of covers available in quite some time.

BP: We offer the variety so backers can choose their favorite. It’s not for me to say. My job is to make sure each edition is powerful and unique and delivers the goods.

At least he was honest, right? I can only imagine the difficulty in trying to discern which cover/version will be more popular than the others. Below, I am including several pages from this new graphic novel and the introduction video from the official Kickstarter campaign page. So make sure you check that all out before you head over to the Kickstarter fundraiser. It ends on Friday, September 4th but if you wait too long then you might miss out on some of the limited quantity rewards, they are going fast.

GoD: Anything you would like to add for our Geeks of Doom readers?

BP: Please consider supporting our Kickstarter projects. YOU make it happen! Thank you VERY much!
