Warner Brothers has found their Joker for LEGO Batman, the upcoming animated spinoff of their 2015 hit The LEGO Movie.
It’s being reported that Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and The Hangover star Zach Galifianakis has been cast as the super villain. The character has previously been played by names like Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson in movies, and by Star Wars star Mark Hamill in numerous voice acting roles.
Galifianakis joins a cast that already includes Will Arnett, once again playing the Batman role he played in The LEGO Movie, and Michael Cera, who was recently cast as the Boy Wonder, Robin.
The movie is set to be directed by LEGO Movie animation supervisor Chris McKay, from a screenplay written by Seth Grahame-Smith (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter).
Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are also attached to the project as producers.
Galifianakis is also known for his various roles in titles such as Out Cold, Tru Calling, It’s Kind of A Funny Story, Due Date, Bored to Death, The Campaign, The Muppets and its sequel Muppets Most Wanted, and the Hangover sequels, as well as his Between Two Ferns interview series.
He’s also done plenty of voice acting before, including Puss in Boots and episodes of American Dad!, The Simpsons, and Bob’s Burgers.
Upcoming projects he can be seen include Tulip Fever, Keeping Up with the Joneses, the TV series Baskets, and the heist comedy Masterminds, which was set to be released this fall but is now postponed indefinitely due to some troubles over at Relativity Media, which recently had to file for bankruptcy.
LEGO Batman was first announced back in October of last year, and the movie is currently expected to release at some point in 2017.
