D23 Expo 2015: ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Divides Earth’s Mightiest Heroes
  |  @   |

Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War is currently the only Phase 3 film in production. With others expected to shoot later in the year, the film was the only one who was able to show some footage at the D23 Expo, in Anaheim, California on Saturday. Before any footage was shown, Kevin Feige revealed that the Russo Brothers are currently filming in Germany with one week of production left. Of course they couldn’t go into great detail about it, because who wants to hear Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans talk (both of whom were also present for the Marvel panel) about a film, when they can show footage for everyone to get excited about.

Check out our description of the footage below.

It all starts off with Falcon (Anthony Mackie) on top of a building, communicating with Captain America (Chris Evans), who is also surveilling a heavily populated area – what we think is an African city seen in leaked photos. Falcon releases Redwing, a drone he launches from his winged-suit. (Redwing was originally a falcon used by Falcon as a scout). As Redwing zeroes in on the targeted armored truck, we see Brock Rumlow (Frank Grillo) in his Crossbones gear kick the rear door down. Soon, a fight ensues, with Crossbones trying to stab Cap with one of his hidden blades. Failing to do so, Cap easily takes him down, to which Rumlow retorts, “You know, he remembered you. Your pal, your buddy, your Bucky.” Crossbones then throws a magnetized bomb on Cap’s shield, who is then forced to throw it into the air in an attempt to save the crowd. However, he fails.

The footage then reveals William Hurt, as General Thunderbolt Ross, whom we haven’t seen since the events of The Incredible Hulk. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Ross has anything nice to say to Cap, as he explains that Earth owes him an unpayable debt, but that there are some who look to him as a hero, while some prefer the word “vigilante.”

We see the more of the post-credit scene that we saw in Ant-Man, where Captain America finds Bucky (Sebastian Stan) caught in a metallic vice. When asked if he remembers Steve Rogers, Bucky explains yes, going into great detail about their childhood experiences.

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) does show himself, still disagreeing with Cap, and at one point proclaiming that he wanted to punch him in his perfect teeth.

Then we get our first look at Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) in action. While it is a very quick shot, we see him unretract his claws, and get ready for battle. Previous reports had stated that he has not aligned himself with either Steve or Cap, so what exactly is his motivation in Civil War will be is unknown.

This being a Civil War, we are bound to see two factions fight against each other. But the footage only reveals Cap’s team of Hawkeye, Falcon, Bucky/Winter Soldier, and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) running towards what we think is Iron Man’s team. At one point, the footage reveals that Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) fight one-on-one, with Widow asking Hawkeye if they are still friends, to which he responds, “Depends on how hard you hit me.”

Smaller shots include Martin Freeman looking at a monitor, maybe overseeing superhero activities – is this where Spider-Man and Black Panther come into play? We also get to see a shot of a well-dressed Vision playing chess with himself.

The final clip shows Steve Rogers opening a van to reveal a sleeping Scott Lang (Paul Rudd). With a clearly embarrassed Falcon suprised that Ant-Man is back, Lang is shocked as to who he is standing in front of, and tries to hide his inner fanboy from Captain America, not realizing that he is shaking his hand for far too long.

Disney’s D23 Expo Press release:

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” marched into D23 EXPO with an introduction by its producer, Kevin Feige. To the delight of the audience, Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie showed up on stage to help Feige show never-seen-before footage from the movie. Before the footage rolled, Feige revealed that there was a special “Easter egg” for fans to find: it was aptly a nod to D23 EXPO.

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

The movie stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Frank Grillo, Tom Holland, with William Hurt and Daniel Brühl. Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” is directed by Anthony & Joe Russo and produced by Kevin Feige. Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Victoria Alonso, Patricia Whitcher, Nate Moore and Stan Lee serve as executive producers and the screenplay is by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely. Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” opens in the U.S. on May 6, 2016.
