Gigantic First-Look

At D23 Expo 2015 yesterday, as the presentations continued to roll out, John Lasseter excitedly talked about Disney Animation Studios’ next project, a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk. To put a twist on the fairy tale classic, Lasseter revealed that the film wouldn’t be set in a fairy tale land, but rather it would take place in Spain during the early “Age of Exploration,” a seemingly fitting setting for a film about exploring areas unknown/unexplored. Like the recent Disney fairy tale films, this one wouldn’t be called Jack and the Beanstalk, instead it would be called Gigantic. It was also confirmed that Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the music team that brought us the Academy Award Winning Frozen, would also write new songs for the film.

More on the story below.

Director Nathan Greno (Tangled) and producer Dorothy McKim (Get A Horse!) revealed that the film would cover the basic story bits, but instead of Jack climbing the beanstalk to find a single castle, he finds that the sky is a world full of giants. We also learn not all giants are evil, and the villains are called storm giants.

Jack would team up with Inma, a feisty young girl based on a real 11-year old the Gigantic production team met in Spain. She would tell stories about how she saw herself as the queen of the land in certain areas of Spain. In the film, when Inma first meets Jack, she thinks he is a toy, and he can’t do anything to stop her. Eventually the two develop a bond that would change their fates!

Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez were kind enough to share a very early demo of the song where Kristen sung the part of Inma, while Robert provided the yelling and screaming. The song was about Imna’s first encounter with Jack, and presumes him as as a toy. We see her put Jack through the ringer, and she tosses him, washes him in the sink, dresses him up, etc. It’s catchy and fun, not as emotional as their previous efforts, but maybe that’s the tone they are going for.

Here’s an early synopsis,

Set in Spain during the Age of Exploration, Disney’s “Gigantic” follows adventure-seeker Jack as he discovers a world of giants hidden within the clouds. He hatches a grand plan with Inma, a 60-foot-tall, 11-year-old girl, and agrees to help her find her way home. But he doesn’t account for her super-sized personality””and who knew giants were so down to earth? “Gigantic” hits theaters in 2018.
