Real Fake History – The Battle of Hong Kong Bay

Today on Machinima’s Real Fake History, we take a deeper look into the Battle of Hong Kong Bay from Guillermo Del Toro‘s 2013 sci-fi action movie, Pacific Rim. One of the more purely fun movies to come out in a long time, the plot revolved around gigantic monsters (Kaiju) coming out of a hole at the bottom of deep Pacific trenches, and wreaking havoc on cities on our west coast, as well as Asian cities. To stop them, we build gigantic human controlled robots to fight the monsters off. It’s hard not to love a movie where a robot swings a ocean liner like a baseball bat into the head of a monster!

Watch the Real Fake History video below.

In the battle between Gipsy Danger (yes, that was the name of the fighting robot) and Kaiju Otachi, a reported $70 billion in damage was done along with the deaths of over 2,000 soldiers and civilians. When Danger grabs a huge ship as a weapon, it turns out one person was left on board; Capt. Willy Knox, sporting a terrible moustache and full body cast. He was “drunk asleep” when the battle erupted. He recalls the pain he endured in his life, all insignificant to that of being in a tanker thrown 3-blocks in between buildings by a giant monster. The saddest part of this tragedy… it was not covered by his insurance. The narrator lets us know that after a break they’ll investigate car alarms, to show that in fact, they do nothing.

Machinima has over 12.5 million subscribers on YouTube and releases a new Real Fake History every Tuesday. If they could expand these into 30-60 minute shows, I’d imagine they’d find a home on the History Channel, in between Ancient Aliens and Pawn Stars. Pacific Rim stars SOA‘s Charlie Hunnam and is available on Amazon Instant Video for $2.99 rental.

Machinima’s synopsis:

The Captain of a docked oil tanker is the unintended victim of Jaeger robot Gipsy Danger’s last-ditch defense of Hong Kong.

Pacific Rim – The Battle of Hong Kong – Real Fake History Ep. 8

“I had the option to choose, ‘Giant Jaeger Robot uses your ship as a cudgel,’ on my insurance, but I opted out. I figured, ‘What are the odds of that happening? One in holy butt f**k.”
