Thor Writer To Pen ‘He-Man and The Masters Of The Universe’ Script

Big screen adaptations of cartoon nostalgia aren’t completely out of the norm these days, Transformers being one of the most popular ones having four films already released, with a fifth and spinoffs on the way. Now, another animated series is being turned into a live-action film, although this one is more of a reboot of the original live-action film.

Sony has been developing He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, a reboot of Masters of the Universe, the 1987 live-action film, which was based on the popular 1980’s He-Man animated series. After going through a number of writers and directors, the studio has finally settled on a writer. According to a new report, Thor screenwriter Christopher Yost has been tapped to pen the script. More on this story below.

Variety was the first to report on the news. Yost also wrote the scripts for Thor: The Dark World and the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, with Craig Kyle. He is also writing the script for the big-screen adaptation of Max Steel. Other writing credits include Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, X-Men: Evolution, Iron Man: Armored Adventures, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. So it is safe to say that he is familiar with how to write adaptations of fan favorite cartoons.

Terry Rossio and Jeff Wadlow also worked on a draft of the script.

In 2007, John Woo was attached to direct the film, but never got the chance to shoot the project and the rights to Masters of the Universe eventually reverted back to Mattel. WB then bought the rights, which then were acquired by Sony and the Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch.

The reboot is based on the 1987 film of the same name, which is based on the animated series He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe. The animated series ran from 1983 – 1985, and centered on a young boy named Prince Adam, the young son of Eternia’s rulers, King Randor and Queen Marlena. But Prince Adam has a secret that only a few know. Endowed with the powers of Castle Greyskull, Adam can transform into the mighty He-Man, and with the help of the Masters of the Universe, they defend Eternia from Skeletor and his evil minions.
