Last week on The Strain, there’s a showdown in a church between Mommy Goodweather (Natalie Brown) and her mini-minions, and Nora (Mia Maestro), Zach, and the cavalry. Eph (Corey Stoll) gets to Washington DC via fake ID, throws his former director off the train, sleeps with a really smart lady, and then gets shot (after his friend and said lady are killed), plus his vampire virus is stolen. He really had a bad trip, huh? Only drop of silver lining – he can trace it back to Palmer (Jonathan Hyde). Fitzwilliam decides to join the team, but doesn’t even last the episode, which is too bad. he would have made an awesome asset. Gus (Miguel Gomez) and Felix (Joaquín Cosio) bond via vampire slaying. The Master changes into a Bolivar (Jack Kesy) body. There’s a new elder in town.

The Strain 2.7 “The Born” review: This episode starts quite interestingly. We see the history of the new sentient warrior (the elder I mentioned above). He used to be a gladiator, there by choice. Turns out he’s Quinlan (Rupert Penry-Jones), a half-human, and half-vampire, which is why sunlight doesn’t bother him. Is this what Palmer is? Eichorst (Richard Sammel)? I wonder.

Nikki is alive! But it hurts Fet (Kevin Durand). So I hate her. He tries to be zen about it, until he can’t. I choose you, Vasiliy Fet. Forget about Dutch (Ruta Gedmintas).

Palmer wants Coco (Lizzie Brocheré) to accompany him on a nice flight on a beautiful day, while NYC burns. Can anything me more incongruous? Plus, seriously Coco. Are you that much of a gold digger? I think she just signed her death certificate though. She’s the one human Palmer cares for, which makes her vulnerable.

Here’s what makes the show and Corey Stoll so great. They are spinning it so that it seems that Eph’s alcoholism is a bigger problem than the strigoi epidemic. He vows revenge on Palmer. I’m glad Zach was less whiny this episode. Keep him like this.

Quinlan is nicknamed “The Born.” Can a gross vampire be appealing? He’s going to test that hypothesis. He has been hunting the master all of his life. There was almost a “proper duel,” with Setrakian (David Bradley) and Quinlan Vs The Master and Eichorst. But “dynamite” Fet but a concrete damper on that plan. Quinlan gave up on Setrakian too quickly, I believe.

This was another great episode. I did not want it to end at all.

I also gotta give props to a person or team that I have never shouted out in any show I’ve ever reviewed. I think it’s the sound team that provides the clickety, behind the throat sounds, of the strigoi. When it comes out just behind their human voice, it is eerie and realistic (and it’s completely fictional so that’s the amazing part). Good job!

The Strain – Next On: The Born

Setrakian and Fet use Fitzwilliam’s info to attack the Master, but a mysterious new player arrives. Dutch receives a surprise guest. Eph returns to NYC frustrated but energized to go after the one person responsible for killing his friends.
