Kickstarter Spotlight: The Threat reboot

A long time ago in an article far, far away I presented you with a Kickstarter Spotlight of The Threat from Stratum Comics. And thanks to 63 of you, the campaign was a success! Looking back, I reviewed the first issue three years ago and another contributor here assessed the second one a few months later.

I love independent comics like this one because they really bring our passions back to basics. But sometimes, creators realize that their vision wasn’t quite fully attained, hence the need for The Threat Issue 1 Reboot!

What’s changing, you ask? Quite a bit, to be honest. In the first four issues of The Threat, there was a different artist every time. By rebooting the comic, you get a more consistent delivery of art from someone who really wants to give it their own personal flair. Plus, the team is adding in several pages to help tell more of the story. In fact, taking the time to streamline the art also enabled writers Mark Schmidt and Vince Chuter to revamp their story a bit, too. I read all four of the original comics and I thoroughly enjoyed them, with very few reservations. But this rebooted edition is smoother and far better illustrated. Jose Fernandez‘s work is a remarkable improvement and seems to mesh with the story seamlessly.

The long and short of the story is that in the not too distant future, mankind has suffered a near mortal wound. Governments have collapsed, and corporations have risen to fill the gap. Our story takes place in Houston, Texas and touches on a myriad of issues that would/will arise in such a situation. The common thread throughout is survival. A small group of people, dissidents if you will, refuse to abide by the new regime, fearing that it doesn’t serve their best interests. As in most cases, this turns out to be true. The struggle to not just survive, but to thrive is real, and this series will document these unsung heroes as they fight the good fight, and seek justice in this new world order.

Now, I have to say that this team definitely has a modest goal for this campaign. The work is done and what they are looking for is distribution, and to raise awareness of their comic. I spoke with Mark and he had this to say:

“I love interacting with our fans, they are the life blood of our industry. I love hearing their reactions to our comics, and Kickstarter is a great way to get people interested in the book.”

When I say these guys have a passion for their work, I mean it! They are fans themselves, and have taken the time to create some unique rewards for different pledge levels. Variant covers, frosted mugs, sketchbooks, posters, tees, and much more! The rewards start at eight bucks and there are a plethora of combos available, to meet the needs of even the pickiest collector.

I urge you to check out the video below; it features the two writers and gives far more details than I am able to provide. After you watch the embedded video, make sure you make your way over to the official Kickstarter campaign page. This crowdfunding campaign ends on the night of September 26th, 2015, so don’t delay. There are many limited reward tiers, and I would hate for you to not get what you want. Personally, I dig the mugs. But I might like Shiner Bock a little too much.
