‘Kong: Skull Island’ Adds Another ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Star

Last weekend, Straight Outta Compton took the number one spot at the box office for the second week running, and looking at the schedule of films, it might take it again for a third. The success of that film will definitely help increase the actors’ stock with the film’s stars like Corey Hawkins, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Jason Mitchell likely to get more high profiled roles.
In fact, Hawkins has already been building himself to be a major star even before he landed the role of Dr. Dre by signing on for Universal and Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island. As the film prepares to shoot for a fall start date, there are new reports confirming that he will be joined by his fellow Straight Outta Compton co-star Mitchell. More on the story below.
THR says that Mitchell will be playing an easygoing pilot.
Not much is known about the film; in fact the plot has been kept a secret since it was announced at Comic-Con back in 2014. All we do know is that it wouldn’t be a traditional retelling of the King Kong story but rather a film that sees a team of explorers venture into the mysterious, creature-laden isle that is also the home of the king of the apes. However, what drew these explorers to even entertain the idea of setting foot onto ominous Skull Island, home of the eponymous King Kong is unknown.
Derek Connelly (Jurassic World) worked on the most recent draft of the script. Previous writers who worked on the script also include Max Borenstein (Godzilla), John Gatins (Flight), and Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler).
Straight Outta Compton has grossed over $114 million dollars worldwide, with 99% of the earnings coming from the domestic box office. Mitchell is currently filming Keanu, a comedy, from writers Jordan Peele and Alex Rubens, about a group of friends who hatch a plot to retrieve a stolen cat by posing as drug dealers for a street gang. You can see him next in Vincent-N-Roxxy, alongside Emile Hirsch, Zoë Kravitz, and Zoey Deutch. He also starred alongside Mark Wahlberg in Contraband and Broken City.
Kong: Skull Island is scheduled to open in theaters on March 17, 2017.
