When MTV’s Scream debuted back in June, the hook was crazed Lakewood killer Brandon James, a deformed teen who hid behind a mask and slaughtered five people 20-years ago. After last week’s episode, the question is no longer who the killer is now, but who was the killer 20-years earlier? Brandon James is looking more and more sympathetic as more clues get revealed. Will (Connor Weil) is dead, head split wide open by the killer’s diabolical Saw-esque trap. Emma (Willa Fitzgerald) is traumatized, seeing Will’s ghost following her around. She’s also seeing visions of her long gone father; a vision who helps reveal a tremendous secret”¦ her mom had Brandon James’s baby! Maggie (Tracy Middendorf) confesses that they she gave the baby up for adoption but it’s existence caused an end to her marriage. Could baby Brandon James be back to get revenge for daddy’s murder? If you ask Noah (John Karna) and Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus), they already know the killer… the recently arrested Mr. Branson (Bobby Campo).

We open one year earlier, as a person in black sneaks past an inept security guard at Lakewood Municipal Records, and steals Brandon James files as well as the mask. Back to the present and wouldn’t you know it, it’s Halloween in Lakewood. They think they have their man in custody. Emma goes in to confront Branson in hopes of triggering a response. Noah puts his two cents into this:

“Can we just go back to the part where your mom, who wears a cardigan and drives an SUV, had a baby with Brandon James?!?!”

“Bran-son, Brandon’s son, that’s redefining hiding in plain sight.”

Piper (Amelia Rose Blaire) lends a helping hand taking Emma to meet Brandon’s institutionalized mom, who remembers being visited by “Brandon’s boy” Seth, the other day. She totally seems loony and easily misled, but that’s good enough for Emma. Brooke (Carlson Young) on the other hand, is convinced it’s someone else, as her computer’s camera started filming her undressing. When they ping all the cell phone calls to Emma, Sheriff Hudson (Jason Wiles) goes to investigate and gets KO’ed by a Brandon James-masked assailant. This totally feeds the theory that there are two or more killers out there.

Emma meanwhile, continues a cliche of young stars in horror shows/movies dressing as Pulp Fiction characters Mia Wallace dance at the party, (a cliche I never get tired of, as Pulp Fiction is my all time favorite movie). As teens gather for the Halloween Dance, Noah and Audrey review Rachel’s old recordings and find something strange… Kieran (Amadeus Serafini) hanging out with first victim Nina (Bella Thorne). Hmmm… maybe there is something to him being strangely absent from all scary events thus far.

At the dance, Noah ups the geeky awesome factor. “I was gonna be the Babadook, but then my mom made me this cape.” Audrey shows Emma the footage of Nina and Kieran but that doesn’t convince her. When she does bring it up, an upset Kieran leaves. Just a few minutes later, Piper shows up to tell Emma that Brandon James mother was wrong, and she actually identified Kieran as “Brandon’s son.” The episode ends with the lights going off at the dance, and a video of Sheriff Hudson tied to a tree, and a camera pan of a bloody jail cell where Branson has escaped… or was freed… or been set up… TO BE CONTINUED!

Whooo! Another great episode in a series of them, as Scream continues to build towards the finale next week. I’m sticking by my Piper Shay theory and saying she is the mastermind behind this whole thing. I don’t know if she was Brandon James’s love child (they’ve hinted boy), but she definitely has some role in this. As for the accomplice, they have fishing lures out for both Kieran and Branson. Remembering the original Scream, Billy (Skeet Ulrich) was the first suspect, cleared, then turned out to be the killer. So it could be Branson. Kieran could easily be the killer, but they’d never lay it on this thick with one episode to go. I think they’re trying to distract from the obvious, so I’m sticking with a Piper/Branson combo. I would NOT be surprised if someone totally different turned out to be the killer, which means the show is tremendously effective in my books!

Scream returns for the season finale, next Tuesday night at 10:00pm ET on MTV.
