Kurt Sutter Prepping ‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Spinoff Centered On Mayans Biker Gang

The story of Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam) may be over on Sons of Anarchy, but another biker gang that existed in FX’s motorcycle drama is getting ready to be a series of its own. Following the success of the series and making his screenwriting debut with Southpaw, creator Kurt Sutter is prepping for a spinoff centered on the Mayans, a gang that played a vital role in the original series, which ended back in December of last year.

More on this story below.

According to THR, details on the spinoff are being kept a secret. But as fans would know, the Mayans were a “rival California motorcycle club, comprising mostly Mexican-Americans in the heroin distribution business.” The Oakland charter was led by president Marcus Alvarez (played by Emilio Rivera). It’s unclear if any of the original members of the gang from the original series will return, although it predictably expected by the fans. Though an antagonist during the first few seasons, Marcus and his Mayan gang gradually comes to a less hostile relation with the Sons of Anarchy in later seasons.

As aforementioned, Sutter is just coming off of his screenwriting debut, Southpaw, a boxing drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal. He is currently working on The Bastard Executioner, a medieval drama set in the 14th century. It is unlikely that Sutter would act as the showrunner for the Sons of Anarchy spinoff, considering that he is busy working on The Bastard Executioner, but he will probably have some sort of creative input on the show. He and his team are currently looking for a writer to run the spinoff.

It’s looking like we are getting more and more spinoffs for televised series than ever before. The Walking Dead‘s spinoff Fear The Walking Dead debuted last Sunday, and set an all time cable debut record. Breaking Bad‘s spinoff Better Call Saul, made its series debut earlier this year, and has been nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Bastard Executioner stars Lee Jones, Stephen Moyer, and Katey Sagal. It will premiere on FX on September 15.
