MST3K: Volume I
DVD
Starring Joel Hodgson, Michael J. Nelson
Not Rated | 480 Minutes
Shout! Factory
Release Date: September 01, 2015

In the not-too-distant future…

In this re-release of the first collection of episodes from the cult comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000, Joel Hodgson, Michael J. Nelson, Tom Servo (Josh Weinstein, Kevin Murphy), and Crow T. Robot (Trace Beaulieu) endure unspeakable cinematic horrors.

Originally released in 2002 by Rhino Entertainment, MST3K: Volume I fell out of print, and the only available copies were crazy expensive. Shout! Factory did us all a solid and re-released the first collection with an upgraded presentation and new bonus features!

In this collection you’ll find beach parties, uncharted islands, space monsters, and passive-aggressive, adulterous skydivers. MST3K: Volume I features four episodes from the Comedy Central era, one with Joel Hodgson as host and three with Mike Nelson. It’s a solid, eclectic mix of episodes spanning seasons two and six. Continue reading for detailed synopses of each episode!

Catalina Caper

Original Air Date: October 13, 1990

Synopsis: This 1967 film by Lee Sholem centers on two surfers-turned-detectives as they look into the theft of a priceless Chinese scroll. Released by Crown International Pictures, Catalina Caper is a beach party movie with musical numbers by Little Richard (singing “Scuba Party”) and The Cascades with “There’s a New World Opening for Me.”

The Creeping Terror

Original Air Date: September 17, 1994

Synopsis: Directed by Vic Savage, 1964’s The Creeping Terror is without a doubt one of the biggest turkeys in the history of cinema. When a space monster crash-lands on Earth and starts ingesting people, a deputy sheriff (director Vic Savage as Arthur Nelson), a square-jawed scientist (William Thourlby) and a bunch of soldiers attempt to contain the creature. The Creeping Terror features one of the most laughable space aliens of all time – a slug-like abomination that moves with all the grace of drunk fraternity brothers in a two-person horse costume.

Bloodlust

Original Air Date: September 3, 1994

Synopsis: Two couples (Robert Reed, June Kenney, Joan Lora, and Eugene Persson) are on a boating trip when they discover an uncharted island. The four investigate and find themselves at the mercy of of Dr. Albert Balleau (Wilton Graff), whose hobby is hunting both animals and humans. Sound familiar? That’s because Ralph Brooke‘s 1961 film is a halfhearted adaptation of Richard Connell classic novel, The Most Dangerous Game.

The Skydivers

Original Air Date: August 27, 1994

Synopsis: Also known as Fiend from Half Moon Bay and Panic at Half Moon Bay, Coleman Francis‘s 1963 film, The Skydivers, is the story of a woman scorn. The Rowes, Beth (Kevin Casey) and Harry (Tony Cardoza), own and operate a small skydiving facility in a desert town. One day, Harry cheats on Beth with Suzy (Marcia Knight), the local bad girl. Suzy’s also seeing Frankie (Titus Moede), a mechanic who was fired by the Rowes for being a no-good drunk. Look, it’s complicated, but the main thing to consider here is this is feature film dedicated to thrill-seeking skydivers who can’t keep it in their pants.

MST3K: Volume I is another fantastic release from Shout! Factory and a must-own for MST3K fans. All four episodes offer some grade-A riffing, with The Creeping Terror standing out as one of this collection’s best episodes. MST3K: Volume I is now available at Amazon.
