So You Think You Can Dance last night, was just about the pure fun, as no one was eliminated during this performance finale. Next week on SYTYCD, we will find out who is America’s favorite dancer out of Travis Wall‘s Team Stage dancers, Gaby Diaz and Hailee Payne, and Stephen “tWitch” Boss‘s Team Street dancers, Jana “JaJa” Vankova and Virgil Gadson. The judges, Nigel Lythgoe, Paula Abdul, and Jason Derulo, offered costructive criticism and support, but at this point, it is totally up to America’s votes. Host Cat Deeley reminded us of the prize at stake, $250,000 and a spot in JLo’s Las Vegas show.
Check out all of the amazing routines and the gorgeous image gallery below.
Choreographer(s): Misha Gabriel & Nick Bass Dancers: Jaja & Hailee Style: Hip Hop Song: “Put It In The Bag” Kalenna feat. B Simm
Jaja of course shined in this performance, but I cannot fault Hailee at all. She was great too. It was really fun and upbeat. They hit the steps hard, and I felt the beat from them, if that makes sense.
Choreographer(s): Phillip Chbeeb Dancers: Virgil & Gaby Style: Lyrical Hip hop Song: “Slip” by Elliot Moss
This was a unique style and performance, quite unexpected from Phillip Chbeeb. It was beautiful, but I felt like there should be a bit more. It must have been long enough though because they time the songs. Some of the steps were quite flowing. There were times when they looked like they rolled around each other, and almost looked like straight contemporary.
Choreographer(s): Nick & RJ Dancers: Jaja & Gaby Style: Jazz Song: “Woman (Oh Mama)” by Joy Williams
This dance was utterly gorgeous with very intricate, linking arm work. They looked beautiful using their flowing skirts to enhance the dance. Such strong moves from these talented women. Nigel may have noticed Jaja’s bit of stiffness and toes that were not so pointy, but I did not.
Choreographer(s): Stacey Tookey Dancers: Jaja & Virgil Style: Contemporary Song: “I Love You (Acoustic)” by Woodkid
Virgil’s leaps are like he’s never heard of gravity. Their emotion and passion shined through. Neither of them are contemporary experts, but you couldn’t tell. They owned the stage.
So. Much. Fun! This was a show. I would have paid to see that on Broadway. Light, lilting, and driven, I enjoyed this immensely. I guess I can see Jason and Nigel’s thing about Hailee stepping out of character, but that did not take away from my delight at watching this.
Choreographer(s): Travis Wall Dancers: Gaby & Hailee Style: Contemporary Song: “Do Not Hang Your Head” by Elizabeth and the Catapult
This SYTYCD routine was breathtaking, and quite loving. The girls were so connected, in body and soul. I almost felt I was peeking into a life I wasn’t supposed to see. They did a fantastic job with one of the best choreographers the show has ever had.
Choreographer(s): Pharside & Phoenix Dancers: Virgil & All-Star Joshua (Season 4) Style: Hip Hop Song: “Let’s Go” by Trick Daddy feat. Twista & Lil Jon
This was mean and dirty and awesome. The energy level was high the entire time. The footwork and tricks were crazy!! Virgil walked up Joshua’s back. This was unbelievable! I don’t even know how to describe some of the moves.
Choreographer(s): Ray Leeper Dancers: Hailey & All-Star Marko (Season 8) Style: Jazz Song: “All Nite (Don’t Stop)” by Janet Jackson
This oozed sex through the fast moves. Hailee lucks out every week with these sexy dances with these handsome guys. Thoroughly entertaining. I really like these Ray Leeper routines. There’s a point in the dance where Marko throws Hailee, and she really gets some height. The arm work looks difficult and effortless at the same time.
Choreographer(s): Chris Scott Dancers: Jaja & All-Star Cyrus (Season 9) Style: Hip Hop Animation Song: “Kaolo” by Yellow Claw
Woohoo! My favorite! This was a continuation of another of my favorite routines (Cyrus & tWitch). She is incredible. She kept up with Cyrus and hit everything hard. Nigel was a bit underwhelmed, but I was not. It’s not easy to do this precise animation.
Choreographer(s): Anthony Morigerato Dancers: Gaby & Zack (Season 11) Style: Tap Song: “Dibidy Dop (Swing Mix) by Club Des Belugas feat. Brenda Boykin
Holy S***! That was amazing! Tap is always nice, but never “wows” me. Never has there been a tap routine that has impressed me as much as this. The rhythms were complex and insane. It had different levels, and they emanated such joy. Crazy good.
