Rumor: Marvel Wants Rebecca Ferguson To Be Their ‘Captain Marvel’
  |

The latest name to enter the competition for the coveted title role in Marvel Studios’ first female-fronted superhero adventure Captain Marvel is an unexpected cause for surprise, but a damn great choice if it turns out to be true.

According to Heroic Hollywood’s Umberto Gonzalez, Rebecca Ferguson, the Swedish actress who starred as Queen Elizabeth in the acclaimed 2013 Starz miniseries The White Queen and impressed audiences all around the world as the conflicted British spy Ilsa Faust in this summer’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, is rumored to be in contention for the role of the galactic superheroine also known by her Earthbound alter ego Carol Danvers.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige first announced Captain Marvel at the company’s El Capitan theater event last October. So far the project has no director attached, but Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) have been toiling away on a script for the Phase Three feature. Joss Whedon had hoped to introduce the character in the final scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but those plans were thwarted as Marvel had failed to cast the role in time.

Ferguson had previously been approached by 20th Century Fox to play the female lead in Rupert Wyatt’s Marvel superhero flick Gambit, but she turned that part down in favor of taking the lead in director Tate Taylor’s (The Help) adaptation of the best-selling Paula Hawkins psychological thriller The Girl on the Train. Ferguson’s co-star in that film, Emily Blunt, has also been linked with the role of Captain Marvel.

The release of Captain Marvel is more than three years away, so if the studio is already casting the part then it’s possible the cosmos-traveling character could be introduced in another Phase Three movie before her solo vehicle opens. James Gunn has ruled out an appearance by Danvers in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 since he has been insistent upon Peter Quill remaining that franchise’s only integral character from Earth.

Captain Marvel is set to open in theaters on November 2, 2018, following the summer release of both Avengers: Infinity War Part I and Black Panther.

  1. she was very good in Rogue Nation. did anyone else think she had a butt double tho? the gratuitous shirt strip shot. seems like she had a much more bubble butt in that close up than in the movie posters or the scene when she comes out of the pool
