‘Pacific Rim 2’ Delayed Indefinitely; May Be Cancelled Altogether
  |  @   |

At first it was thought that Legendary’s move to Universal would mean that the studio would be taking their properties to another distributor. But recent developments have shown that Legendary may not have completely severed their ties with WB as first thought. But Kong: Skull Island‘s move from Universal over to Warner Bros. looks to be having an effect on other tentpole properties that were under the WB and Legendary partnership.

According to a new report, one of those films that might be affected is Pacific Rim 2, which would have been distributed by Universal at the time. But now it is looking like production of that film may be delayed, or worse it just may be cancelled all together. More on the story below.

THR’s report doesn’t get into specifics as to why Pacific Rim 2 is being delayed, which may or may not lead to its cancellation, but with Legendary signing a three-picture deal that includes Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla 2, and the untitled Godzilla vs. King Kong movie, the omission of a Pacific Rim 2 is quite telling.

According to THR Legendary wants to produce a Pacific Rim 2, which grossed $411 million worldwide. However, because of a costly production budget, being a high grossing film does not guarantee a sequel. Pacific Rim had a poor performance at the domestic box office, grossing just $101 million, but sources say that Legendary was happy with the fact the film performed well in China, where the company is heavily invested in, but a clear lack of development, it doesn’t seem like it will get made.

Pacific Rim 2 was announced back in 2014. Director Guillermo del Toro couldn’t contain his excitement about the news, and had this to say:

“The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”

But the main issue seems to come down to money. The reported production budget for Pacific Rim 2 was $190 million, which is just short of Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s $250 million, and a little over Jurassic World‘s $150 million. But the studio doesn’t feel that Pacific Rim‘s box office performance warrants a sequel. Which leaves Legendary in the position of figuring out what they should do with all of their extra earnings.

With Legendary producing all these mega monster and mecha films, fans had hoped to see some sort of crossover. Even del Toro had expressed an interest in such a crossover, but these recent developments will leave many wondering if the film will be made at all.

Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled for an April 7, 2017 release.
