Guillermo Del Toro Responds To ‘Pacific Rim 2’ Production Halt Rumors
  |  @   |

This week was a very revealing one for both Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures. Legendary not only moved Kong: Skull Island over to Warner Bros., but they also got WB to sign a three-picture deal days later. Then, Universal was reportedly unhappy with Warcraft, though director Duncan Jones begs to differ, arguing that being moved next year to the same release date that Jurassic World had this year was a good sign. Finally, it looks as though Universal is deciding between delaying Pacific Rim 2 or just canceling it altogether.

Now, the man behind Pacific Rim isn’t giving up hope on its sequel. Director Guillermo Del Toro is now responding to the reports made earlier this week, and even says that it won’t be cancelled, just delayed, and that he may sneak in another movie before directing Pacific Rim 2. More on the story below.

Del Toro talked to EW earlier this week about the status of Pacific Rim 2.

“We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it.”

What Del Toro doesn’t do is respond to the rumors that Universal’s reason to delay or cancel the film was because of Pacific Rim‘s poor box office performance here in the States. The film had a production budget of $190 million, and grossed $101 million domestically. However, it did exceptionally well overseas, grossing over $300 million internationally and exceeding expectations in China. In the end, Pacific Rim grossed $401 million worldwide.

He does confirm that there is a slight delay though, but during that time he won’t be lounging around, and may in fact “do another movie in the middle.”

What is interesting is that talks of a Hellboy 3 have started to surface in the past few weeks, with Ron Perlman expressing interest in finishing out the franchise. So he may or may not be referring to that film. Del Toro then jokes that if he had the money, he would work on all the projects he wanted to work on, especially the ones that were cancelled.

“I can tell you this, if I was a billionaire, I would definitely do Hellboy 3, Pacific Rim 2, and At the Mountains of Madness.” He laughs. “And I would quickly become a millionaire.”

The fact that he even acknowledges all the projects he had hoped would be released ending up getting cancelled is hilarious. A little self-depreciating humor never hurts. It should be interesting to see what kind of projects Del Toro will end up working on. We’ll keep you posted on any developments as they come.

Universal and Legendary will release Del Toro’s next film, Crimson Peak, in theaters on October 16, 2015.

  1. I hope he’s right! Pacific Rim was a bit on the cheesey side but just the right amount without ruining the movie and instead, making it fun. Just as I thought the end of Lost World (T-Rex running rampant through LA) was a better “Godzilla” movie than that Matthew Broderick film, I thought Pacific Rim brought a fun Godzilla-like vibe to it (something I felt missing from the actual Godzilla remake). I was definitely looking forward to Pacific Rim 2 and hope del Toro gets the chance to see it though!
