Drew Goddard’s ‘Sinister Six’ Could Still Happen
  |  @   |

Drew Goddard‘s Sinister Six and Venom were just a couple of the Amazing Spider-Man spinoff films that Sony was hoping to release to launch their Spider-Man shared universe. However, after two films failed to meet expectations, the studio made an unprecedented move, they made a deal with their studio rivals, Marvel/Disney, to share the character, and allow the webslinger to play in their sandbox.

The deal effectively killed Sony’s plans for their single Marvel character universe, which was a relief to some, leaving Goddard’s script to sit on a shelf. But the Daredevil Netflix series creator wrote the spinoff in such a way where it can stand on its own and not worry about “mythology or continuity,” and now he is talking about how he hopes that the film still could happen. More on the story below.

Speaking to iO9, Goddard talked about the inspiration behind his Sinister Six film and teased the possibility that the film still could happen:

“My vision of that movie was a summer annual. So you didn’t have to worry about continuity. It was just, “˜We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.’ I intentionally wanted a movie that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think.”

Well if he “intentionally” wrote a script that doesn’t “worry about mythology and continuity” that might be a tiny problem considering Marvel Studios is pretty keen on their films knowing they are a part of a bigger picture. But Goddard says this script could “fit into any plan.” That is a really good sign, and since Goddard has already worked on Daredevil, which is considered to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he or anyone else who will edit the script in a way where it is a part of the MCU mythology. The good thing is that if they do have plans to use the Sinister Six as villains, they have plenty of time to work on the script.

Although his script has been shelved, Goddard knows that the Sony/Marvel deal ultimately helps the webslinger and his fans:

“The tricky part about all this is I love this plan. I love that you get to see Spider-Man in Marvel movies. I think that’s a great thing. I’m on board with that decision because as a fan that’s what I want. So who knows what the future holds? This is Hollywood, man, you’ve gotta play the long game.”

Directed by Jon Watts (Cop Car), using a script written by Vacation and Horrible Bosses scribes John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, the untitled next Spider-Man movie stars Tom Holland as the webslinger. Marisa Tomei will play Aunt May. Sony plans to release the film on July 29th, 2017, but Spider-Man will make his MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War, which opens in theaters on May 6, 2016.
