John Boyega Says ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Script Made Him Cry
  |  @   |

Crying is only a natural reaction to something when one is experiencing something overwhelmingly emotional. It is also a reaction for some actors when reading a great script – and sometimes it’s an over-exaggerated and often overused response. But when an actor does say that, it sets the bar pretty high. A movie like Star Wars: The Force Awakens already has a pretty high bar that was set the moment we saw the first trailer for the film back in November of last year.

Disney and Lucasfilm have been on one massive marketing campaign for the highly anticipated film having released two teasers, a couple of TV spots, and various other marketing tie-ins. However, we still know very little about the film, if anything at all. While that isn’t going to change any time soon, at least not until the release of the full theatrical trailer and an updated plot synopsis, film star John Boyega is sharing his thoughts and emotional reaction to the script. Check out what he had to say in the full story below.

Speaking to GQ Magazine, Boyega talked about his reaction to the script:

“When I read the script I cried, and I’m not really a big crier”¦ I’m more like a frog-in-the-throat kind of guy, who’ll try to hold it in and make sure I don’t let it all out.”

That must have been one powerful script. Boyega talked earlier this year about how he had to keep his role in Star Wars a secret, even from his own mother. But the actor does give us some clues to Finn’s role in the film:

“Finn is dope. His story is so epic. It’s a story that’s never been seen before, but it also mirrors the stories of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. And he’s quirky and charismatic and funny. For me, he was the best character in the script.”

So Finn is an amalgamation of Skywalker and Solo, perhaps a nice nod to the previous characters of the original trilogy, and a nice segue so that their spirits can still resonate in the following films of the franchise.

The actor does admit though that lightsabers aren’t exactly light. In fact it was some major added weight to his training:

“They’re heavy, those things, and there’s a lot of running involved,” he said. “I was trained on a high incline treadmill so when it came to it I could sprint around the desert in a leather jacket. They should do a Star Wars weight loss program.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens also stars Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie Andy Serkis, Max Von Sydow, and Lupita Nyong’o, and sees the return of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, and Peter Mayhew. Directed by J.J. Abrams, who co-wrote the script with Lawrence Kasdan, the seventh installment of the Star Wars saga opens in theaters on December 16 in France, in the U.K. on December 17, and in the U.S. on December 18.
