The plot details of Kong: Skull Island have been kept under wraps since the cast has been coming together. We do know that the film stars an eclectic and exciting roster that is made up of Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Corey Hawkins, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Wilkinson, John C. Reilly, and Jason Mitchell.
But as there are new reports that John Goodman is also joining the cast of the film, new plot details are emerging, and it tells us something very different than what was previously reported. More on the story below.
When Legendary movedKong: Skull Island from Universal to Warner Bros., WB had announced that they had made a three-picture deal with Legendary, which would see the major studio distribute Skull Island first, followed by Godzilla 2, and finally ending with the untitled King Kong/Godzilla crossover that would see the two legendary beasts go head-to-head or even cooperate to fight another bigger threat. Though if the two do end up fighting, Legendary believes that they will be able to deliver a story that will address the obvious difference in their sizes.
It was previously thought that Skull Island would be a prequel to the King Kong film, but a report from Deadline says that it will be set in a different time period that would honor the original, and possibly be set in the 1970s. The story will center on a traveler (Hiddleston) who leads a team of explorers on an expedition of mythical island and home of the king of the apes where he hopes to find his brother and a mythical serum.
While Hiddleston is the man who will lead the team, it is Randa, a government official who will escort them to the island. Randa will be played by the recently added John Goodman, who has previously starred with Larson in The Gambler.
Legendary is said to have made Kong: Skull Island a top priority. Seeing that the film is now a part of the King Of Monsters Cinematic Universe, it makes sense that they are fast tracking the project, which is said to start shooting this Fall for a March 10, 2017 release. But that was the date when the film was over at Universal, so it is unclear if WB will stick to that date or move it else where.
Kong: Skull Island is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts from a script by John Gatins and Max Borenstein (Godzilla). John Jashni and Thomas Tull are producing along with Mary Parent.
