Not every actor was born to play a superhero; we certainly saw that when Fantastic Four came out. And sometimes, the right role doesn’t come the actor’s way. For Matt Damon, the opportunity to play a superhero has passed him by, or at least that’s what he believes. While making the press rounds for Ridley Scott‘s The Martian, the actor shared his thoughts on which superhero he would like to play and who he would like to have seen be behind the camera. More on the story below.
Speaking to the NY Daily News, Damon said that if he could play any superhero, it would have to be Daredevil. While his best friend, Ben Affleck, was the one to don the red-horned suit, the actor says he had had conversations about doing the movie in 2003.
“That’s the comic we read when we were kids, but when that one came along I chickened out, because I couldn’t tell. I hadn’t seen the director (Mark Steven Johnson’s) work and I didn’t know. So I just said, ‘No.’ Ben was like, ‘I gotta do it.'”
Well, that shipped has sailed. Not only did Daredevil turn out to be a flop for Fox, but the rights reverted back to Marvel, who then turned it into a dark and gritty success over at Netflix.
But Damon can still dream, and if he were to play Daredevil he would want to have Christopher Nolan as the film’s director,
“If Chris Nolan came up to me and said, ‘I want to do Daredevil,’ I would be in.”
While I don’t see that happening any time soon, I would like to see Damon in a Christopher Nolan film — perhaps he can star in the mystery project that The Dark Knight is currently working on.
Damon added that he would like to direct a superhero movie as opposed to starring as one. Though he is reprising his role as Jason Bourne for the untitled fifth Bourne movie, which stars Tommy Lee Jones as a high-ranking CIA officer, Alicia Vikander as the female lead, and Julia Stiles, who will reprise her role as Nicky Parsons. The film franchise adds Vincent Cassel as a villain, with Django Unchained actor Ato Essandoh playing a mystery role.
The Martian opens in theaters on October 2, 2015, while Bourne 5 is scheduled for a July 15, 2016 release.

I think Matt would have been an excellent Daredevil. Unlike…his friend.
