In last week’s series premiere of Minority Report, we are reintroduced to the world of precrime and precogs. Based on the Philip K. Dick story and the 2002 Steven Spielberg film, Minority Report tells of the near future where murders are prevented before they take place, thanks to the visions of three precognitive children contained by the government. The film ended with a conspiracy discovered, that led to the freeing of the precogs and ending of precrime. Now 10 years later, Dash (Stark Sands) is an adult precog who struggles seeing bits and pieces of murders, but missing the crucial info his siblings provided. In episode one, he forms an unlikely alliance with Detective Lara Vega (Meagan Good) and the two are able to prevent a terrorist attack on the Mayor and his family. Their alliance is highly illegal, and requires both to make uncomfortable compromises. Vega must conceal how she actually solved the crime, while Dash is forced to ask his estranged twin Arthur (Nick Zano) for help.

Beware! Spoilers ahead!

The complications of their relationship shows up early in Episode 2, as both Vega’s boss Will (Wilmer Valderrama) and her partner Akeela (Li Jun Li) inquire as to how exactly she knew to be in the right place at the right time. Meanwhile, Dash is having his old caretaker Wally (Daniel London) help him at physical cost, while continuing to need Arthur to provide him with the names and details his visions lack. I really like how they’re making a point about bending one’s morals for the greater good. That was a huge theme of the film, the fact that the precogs weren’t perfect, there were… minority reports. Thus, we understand that some of the people who were locked away may have been innocent. Is locking up one innocent person a fair trade if you prevent hundreds of murders? Vega and Dash deal with these issues as they track their next case, this one involving a love guru who murders a girl at his singles club. There’s a poignant moment where Dash confesses his feelings to Vega about his own murder of the episode one criminal. After personally watching 700 murders take place, he doesn’t have the emotional baggage one might suspect.

Again, I am loving the realistic future we get in this show. The best new development is the wrist touch compatibility sensors at the singles club. Imagine walking into a club, touching wrists and finding out whether there’s no shot or a real possibility without all the small talk and drink buying! Vega and Dash even have a cute moment where they end up at 51%. And fans of General Hospital should keep their eyes open for a special guest star.

Sands and Good have the chemistry that will drive the show forward, and the futuristic setting and gadgets keep things interesting. I’m worried that the show may end up falling into typical buddy cop show tropes, but for two episodes, I’m really enjoying it. We know that Dash’s seer siblings, Arthur and Agatha (Laura Regan) have their own opinions of their brothers new “job”, and there is an ominous view into the future for them as well.

This show breezes by, has a great lead duo, cool tech and tremendous continuity from film to show. What else do you want in a show?
