Vin Diesel Confirms One Last ‘Fast and Furious’ Trilogy

Furious 7 Vin Diesel

Last week, a report came out detailing the troubles that are plaguing Fast and Furious 8. There is currently no director attached to the project, which makes it less likely that the sequel will start filming for its April 2017 release. There were also reports of franchise star Vin Diesel being difficult to work with while on-set, with some claiming that he “questioned even small details on elaborate action sequences,” which would result in a halt during a complex production.

Now, Diesel has taken it upon himself to clarify some of these rumors. Posting a message on his official Facebook page, the actor has expressed his gratitude towards Universal for working with him throughout the entire franchise, and has confirmed that he “would deliver one last Trilogy to end the saga.” More on the story here below.

Here’s what Diesel posted,

And just in cast you cannot read the embedding,

The fans of the Fast & Furious SAGA are the best fans in the world… Since I became the Producer in 2008, you have been with me every step of the way… literally giving me feedback that proved invaluable. Thank you.

My producing partner Neal would love for me to just sign off on a director, but this is too special a franchise, so these matters have to be very carefully handled. To be clear, NO ONE has been offered to helm Fast 8 yet… let alone seen a script.

Universal has been so good to me and so trusting of the vision… they have been like family… I promised the studio I would deliver one last Trilogy to end the saga.

I will announce the directors on my next post…

Well there you have it, the untitled Fast and Furious 9 will be the last film of the franchise. Now this has been something that has been in the works. Last year, there were reports that Universal had been planning for at least three more Fast and Furious films before the release of Furious 7. At that time, they were trying to negotiate a deal with Justin Lin, who had helmed the films from Tokyo Drift to Fast and Furious 6. However, Lin went on to direct Star Trek Beyond, while James Wan (who had directed Furious 7) went on to direct The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist.

It’s interesting to hear that no one yet has been offered a chance to direct, and that no one has seen a script – outside Diesel and Neal Moritz, of course. But if Fast and Furious 8 were to make its tentative April 2017 release, you would think they would want to start shooting soon.

It’s not going to be easy though. The late Paul Walker was a major piece of the franchise, and it would be hard to see a film without him, especially since there was good muscle car vs imports banter between O’Connor and Toretto. It’s not exactly clear where they will go from here. Diesel has expressed an interest in having the sequel set in New York, though that has yet to be confirmed. But at least there is a finish line that Universal and Diesel can agree on, and now we just have to trust that they will end on the kind of note that will honor the successful (and very lucrative) franchise.
