Pacific Rim

Despite what has been said about the delay or possible cancellation of Pacific Rim 2, director Guillermo del Toro said that they were going to turn in a screenplay and a budget within a few weeks. A small sign of optimism to say the least, but given the current relationship between Legendary and Universal, things weren’t looking good for the mecha vs kajiu sequel. And now the most recent reports are confirming some of our worst fears.

Universal will be pulling Pacific Rim 2 from its release date of August 4, 2017, and will be replacing it with Pitch Perfect 3. More on the story below.

EW says that even though Pacific Rim 2 no longer has a release date, they still intend to make the film to uphold their partnership with Legendary. With the kind of deals that Legendary has been making with Warner Bros., I’m a bit surprised that they didn’t take the movie to them to crossover with their King of Monsters shared universe.

Here’s the quote from Universal that confirms Pacific Rim 2 is staying over at Universal, for now at least:

“Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

Now, remember of that $411 million it made worldwide, Pacific Rim failed to make a big enough splash here in the States. The first film only grossed $101 million during its domestic theatrical run, with China grossing the majority of the $411 million.

Last week del Toro responded to the rumors of the production halt:

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it.”

Now with the film lacking a release date, this will give the director more time to perfect the script with Zack Penn. That is, if they can get the script from page to screen, something that del Toro acknowledged has been a recurring theme with him:

“I can tell you this, if I was a billionaire, I would definitely do Hellboy 3, Pacific Rim 2, and At the Mountains of Madness And I would quickly become a millionaire.

As for Pacific Rim 2‘s replacement, Universal is going with Pitch Perfect 3. Together, both Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2 have grossed approximately $400 million worldwide. The first film was a sleeper hit that exceeded expectations, which resulted in the inevitable sequel. However, the second film produced better numbers in its summer release, but it wasn’t as well-received as the first.

While it is dated towards the end of the summer blockbuster season, there have been a few sleeper hits that have taken the number one spot at the box office for a number of consecutive weeks, so maybe the studio is hoping that Pitch Perfect 3 will recreate some of that magic once again. Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Brittany Snow are all confirmed to reprise their respective roles.
