Marvel Studios Have A Plan B For MCU Stories If Character Rights Revert Back To Them

During a Q & A event for the home entertainment release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, /Film asked about introducing characters they never would believe they would have the rights to into their universe. Here’s what Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told him:

“The short answer is: the most important thing is the standalone movie, relaunching Spider-Man with a standalone movie with a new storyline that fits into this universe – that’s job number one for us. And as is the case, the connectivity is great but it doesn’t drive the train. That being said, if I understand what you’re asking, we had”¦ this has been a dream of ours for a long time, and we always had contingency plans should you know “” which we always do anyways. Are we going to be able to make another movie with this actor? If we are then we’ll do this, if not, we’re going to do this. If we get the rights to a certain character that’d be great, then we’d do this, if not, we’d do this. So we always sort of operate with those alternate timelines available and are ready to shift if something happens.”

Well Wolverine 3 is rumored to be the end of Bryan Singer’s X-Men film saga; although he has expressed an interest in staying with the franchise for as long as he can, so there is a possibility that after each of the respective franchises stories are over they can come to some sort of agreement and share the characters. Wishful thinking I know.

Still, it’s no surprise that Marvel is planning this far ahead. Remember, talks of Sony sharing Spider-Man with Marvel were teased long before the announcement came last year, and though introducing him in Captain America: Civil War looked like a last-minute decision, Feige’s comments seem to tell us that they’ve had something like this up their sleeves in the event they were allowed to use characters that were out of their reach. So even if they have plans to use X-Men, Wolverine, or any of the Fantastic Four, and couldn’t use them, they could easily be written out, and no one would be none the wiser.
