Lionsgate To Develop ‘The Kingkiller Chronicle’ Movies, TV Series, Video Games

Lionsgate has scored the rights to The Kingkiller Chronicle fantasy book series by author Patrick Rothfuss, who had talked to various studios about adapting his work including Warner Brothers, MGM, and others before eventually reaching an agreement with Lionsgate.

Part of that agreement was that Lionsgate be willing to adapt the stories on multiple platforms. So instead of just making movies based on the books, they’ll also be simultaneously developing a TV series and video games as well.

Of the news, Rothfuss said:

“Honestly, I’ve never been very interested in a straight-up movie deal. But Lionsgate was willing to work out something different, a multiplatform deal where they develop the films, TV series, and games simultaneously. That will give us the screen time to develop the characters and show off the world. What’s more, through this whole process, they’ve treated me with amazing respect. I never thought a studio would approach me as a creative partner who understands how stories work.”

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erik Feig also released a statement, saying:

“Pat Rothfuss’s imaginative storytelling, the spellbinding character Kvothe and the vivid world of Temerant in The Kingkiller Chronicle series have a passionate and savvy fan base and the potential to reach an even broader audience in adaptation. It is rare that a property comes along with a world so rich and multilayered that it lends itself to exploration across film, television and video game audiences at the same time.”

Feig is overseeing the development of the movie(s) along with creative executives Jeyun Choi Munford and Jessica Switch, while Chris Selak, executive vice president of TV, will oversee the series development and president of interactive ventures and games Peter Levin will handle the video game(s).

The “Kingkiller Chronicle” book series follows Kvothe, a man with great talent in the magical arts who goes on to develop a reputation as the most notorious wizard ever to live.
