The GoD List Comics Pull List

Each and every week, I, “Illegal Bat!” Henchman 21 and “Get over it!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of October 7, 2015. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

Yes! This week marks the start of the first batch of post Secret Wars, All-New All-Different Marvel comics relaunches. Also, Secret Wars #6 is out, meaning the series is two-thirds done”¦ Yeah, this is comics. If you’re not interested in the joy joy feeling that comes with dealing with Marvel’s publication schedule, there are plenty of other great books out there for you. Yes, it’s time for another jam-packed edition of The GoD List!

Henchman 21

Survivors' Club #1 cover by Bill Sienkiewicz

Survivors’ Club #1 (DC/Vertigo Comics – $3.99) Survivors’ Club #1 tells the story of 6 people linked by a shared history of having lived through scenarios one would usually find in horror movies; haunted houses, killer dolls, ghosts, and who knows what else. Separated by distance and time, the six survivors must find each other when occult events start occurring. Writers Lauren Beukes and Dave Halverson team up for the story, but I’m excited to see more work from artist Ryan Kelly (Local). Kelly is a fantastic artist, especially when it comes to drawing real people. Survivors’ Club also sounds like the perfect book to get into the Halloween mood, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Paper Girls #1 (Image Comics – $2.99) Paper Girls is a new series by Brian K. Vaughan, writer of Saga, Y the Last Man, and a lot of other great comics. That alone should get you to pay attention. If you need more information, apparently Paper Girls is about 4 young girls who discover a mystery that will change their world. If there’s one thing that Vaughan excels at, it’s mixing the mundane and the extraordinary, and it sounds like this is a series that will do that. With art by Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman) and art by the always great Matt Wilson, this will also be one fine looking book.

Southern Bastards #11 (Image Comics – $3.50) It’s about damn time a new issue came out!

Starve #5 (Image Comics – $3.50) Okay, I have an inexplicable love of any comic that deals with cooking, and so far, Starve has just reinforced my love. Starve isn’t just about cooking; in fact, the cooking is kind of the least important thing. What Brian Wood has done with Starve is create a great family drama that also contain Wood’s trademark social commentary. Starve is as much about the setting up a dark, dystopian world as it is telling the story of a man dealing with all the enemies that he has made in a lifetime. Danijel Zezelj’s minimalist style and the muted color palette provided by Dave Stewart combine for some evocative art that perfectly fits the story. I’m going to resist the urge here to make a comment about Starve leaving you hungry for more. Oh crap.

Doctor Strange #1 (Marvel Comics – $4.99) It’s odd to think that Doctor Strange is probably the most anticipated of the new Marvel books, but that’s what happens when you mix the current best writer in comics with an artist who was born to work on this character. Jason Aaron is just doing everything well right now, at least when it comes to writing comic books. All of his books are consistently great and surprising, and he’s able to give each of his books a unique voice, and that’s what I expect to be on display here. It’s been a long time since Doctor Strange had his own book, so there is plenty of room for Aaron to do his thing. And then you’ve got the art by Chris Bachalo. Bachalo has always had one of the most distinctive styles in comics, with a lot of oddly proportioned figures, unconventional panel layouts and just a general penchant for a bizarre look to his art that will be well suited for showing the mystical vistas that go along with a good Dr. Strange story. There are a lot of us looking forward to this series and this is one series that I’m pretty sure will live up to the hype.

Secret Wars #6 (Marvel Comics – $3.99) It’s about damn time a new issue came out!

Empress Eve

Dead Vengeance #1 Dark Horse Comics

Dead Vengeance #1 (Dark Horse Comics – $3.99) Set in 1940s Detroit, Dead Vengeance #1 launches a new miniseries from Dark Horse about a popular radio show host, John Doe, who’s been presumed dead for a decade, but is brought back to life at a sideshow carnival. With no memories of his past, John Doe must figure out the mystery of his death — all while he begins to decompose! You can read a 6-page preview through the purchase link. I got a chance to read an advanced copy of the full issue, and I really enjoyed it. I can’t wait to find out the end to this mystery, and watch as John Doe tries to solve it. Highly recommend.
