Orlando Jones

At New York Comic-Con Saturday night in the Empire Room, Orlando Jones had the stage all to himself, but being the down-to-earth funnyman he is, joked it was too NYPD, and came down to take questions from the audience, up close and personal. Jones, who played Captain Frank Irving, on FOX’s Sleepy Hollow, answered questions on a wide range of subjects including future projects, his love for Lando, and 7-Up.

Check out some of the Q&A, plus panel pics below.

Orlando Jones was really funny, wonderfully charming, joking the whole time with the audience. One audience member commented on the awesome multicultural aspect of Sleepy Hollow. Jones joked, “Even the black people in Sleepy Hollow are like who are these black people in Sleepy Hollow?” He went on to say, “Like they accidentally got it right. So awesome. It doesn’t feel forced. The fact that its multicultural is important. It’s about all of us being represented. I think we did a great job. It’s amazing.”

Q: What’s it like going from comedy to someone serious like Frank Irving?”
Jones: Frank Irving is too busy seeing what bad things could happen.

Q: What is Frank’s direction?
Jones: You and my mother completely agree. I don’t know yet. Trying to figure it out.

Q: If you could be like, “I want this role and they would give it to you?”
Jones: I would take a look at origins at some of the characters. What first got me into this was Lando Calrissian. I was like, “Star Wars sounds like it sucks! It’s a horrible name.” My mother forced me and when I came out, I was like, “I need a lightsaber right now! I feel it!” I was that crazy about it. So when Lando Calrissian showed up, I saw myself. Not even about race, just the nerdy side of myself. I think I try to focus on that.

Q: How did you get where you are and what are some tips?
Jones: 2 things – One, tell your story. That’s part of the creation. Being bold enough is an important step. I think there’s a confidence that comes with that. Two, you now have a phone in your pocket. You can edit stuff. You don’t have to wait for anyone to tell your story.

Jones led a sing along of Happy Birthday upon request to an audience member in a gorgeous voice. A young boy came up and asked about his other projects:

“I’m gonna tell him about something that’s TV-14. (To his parents) Is that ok? Taintedlove.com is a graphic novel/comic book I did. Go watch that. I did a movie with Jason Sudeikis, Devil In The Deep Blue Sea. Also High School 51 about a high school in Area 51. If you stay in touch with me on social media I promise I will tweet.”

Q: How did you go from being hysterical to so serious.
Jones: It’s magic. Unicorn tears. They’re hard to get. No joke.

Q: Light side or dark side?
Jones: Dark side

Q: 7-up. Ad-libbed or scripted?
Jones: Ad-libbed. You know the hams? You know what the image is and they looked like 2 big Christmas hams. We got banned from the Super Bowl that year. Katie Couric said it was vile and disgusting. My mom was mad at me. She said, “You were embarrassing.” I think the only thing I can say to this is “˜up yours.’

Q- If you were gonna be an alien in a movie, what kind of alien would you be?

Jones: Okay, Predator. But really smart and real. I wanna be something that could move around. (He gets handed a predator head and puts it on.)

Q: When you were filming Sleepy Hollow, what was your favorite part?
Jones: I love when it’s foggy and dark, because that’s really fun. Gives you the heebie jeebies.

He plays with a toddler with the microphones. So cute! The kid runs away with the mike. Jones says, “That’s the way to exit stage.”

Q: If you didn’t go into acting, what would you have done?
Jones: I have no idea. For me, I couldn’t see the world that way. Do this or die.

The panel ended with a fan asking Orlando Jones to be on her GISHWHES team (Greatest International Scavenger Hunt The World Has Ever Seen – Founded by Supernatural’s Misha Collins), of which Jones has participated before. He said he couldn’t commit to being on her team because of everyone else in the audience, but… “I’ll highly consider it.”
