NYCC 2015: Screen Junkies: Honest Trailers & Movie Fights Panel
  |  @   |

Screen Junkies has over 4.7 million subscribers on YouTube and they’re… just like us: regular guys who love movies, and love even more to sit around talking about them, complaining and mocking them as well. I had the opportunity watch their panel appearance at New York Comic-Con on Friday.

The biggest view-getters from their channel is the Honest Trailers feature, which debut on Tuesdays, and Movie Fights on Fridays. Honest Trailers consists of hilarious 4-6 minute videos where they mock the ins and outs of popular movies with phony trailers that may tell too much truth. Movie Fights features arguments based on random film questions like Indy/Han, DC/Marvel, etc.

Hal Rudnick, Spencer Gilbert (writer of HT), and Dan Murrell (Movie Fight Champion) were part of the panel, where they took a few Honest Trailer questions from the crowd. They said they may dabble in the classics soon, and Spencer joked about wanting an Honest Trailer for Schindler’s List! When asked about favorites of the over one-hundred Honest Trailers, Spencer started to sing his mock lyrics to the Lion King trailer, then added that the musical ones are his favorites.

Then they debuted their Jurassic World Honest Trailer!!! – This was EPIC, I won’t spoil it, wait for the review this Tuesday.

Then it was onto the Movie Fights section where we, the audience, would crown the first-ever NYCC Movie Fight’s Champion.

Fans vs. Movie Fighters

Round 1 – Fan (Jet) vs. Spencer: Question 1: Out of all the movies, who is the best Star Wars character?

Spencer – Han Solo because he’s the perfect human character in a world of super powered good and evil.
Jet – Obi Wan because he’s a flawed character, powerful and humane, and the best part of the prequels. Jet won people over through furious debate.
Winner: Jet by applause after split vote…although we all know Han is better than Obi-Wan.

Round 1 – Fan (Robert) vs. Dan: Question 2 – Who is the best Marvel director?

Robert – Jon Favreau for setting the foundation of the MCU with Iron Man, and giving Robert Downey Jr. a chance to redeem his career. This was really his only argument.
Dan – Russo Brothers for making Captain America 2, humanizing Captain America, and improving on everything from first one. He calls Cap 2 a transcendent film, a standalone classic. Robert began to falter and stumble (lot of pressure in the 500-seat auditorium)
Winner: Dan by a landslide.

Round 2 – Jet vs. New fan Carlos: Question: Marvel just announced 3 phase three film; which do you want to see?

Carlos – Sinister 6 as Marvel’s only villain centered film with Spidey acting as a bad guy.
Jet dominates this with yet another Fantastic Four reboot only this time done by Marvel and done right, where the four characters can interact within the MCU.
Winner: Jet (this guy is good).

Round 3: Dan vs. New fan Conrado: Question: What movie franchise would you bring back from the dead?

Conrado lost the crowd immediately by pleading for an animated Indiana Jones in the TinTin tradition. That just fell flat.
Dan argued for Alien, but keep it simple… a hero/heroine stuck on a ship in space with a Xenomorph… simple and classic.
Winner: Dan, easy.

Finals: Dan vs. Jet – Question: Best movie set in NY?

Dan, of course, went with Ghostbusters and Jet argued for Goodfellas. They traded verbal jabs and had a great debate before to the shock of everyone, Jet won and dethroned the reigning champ!!!

The panel was finished up with fellow Screen Junkies Andy Signore and Nick Mundy appearing live streaming from LA to inform us of the upcoming Screen Junkies app!

All in all, this was a kick-ass panel, packed with boisterous fans. If you love the Screen Junkies or just movies in general, hit up their YouTube channel and watch as many videos as possible. I’ve taken to watching Movie Fights at the gym, rather than listen to music.

Be sure to check out back here next week for our coverage of their Jurassic World HT because it was so good. Honest Trailer debut every Tuesday (see our coverage, and there are new Movie Fights every Friday. Maybe Jet will get to defend his title.
