The GoD List Comics

Each and every week, I, “Sports Reference!” Henchman 21 and “Movie Reference!” Empress Eve read a lot of comics. Seriously you guys, a lot of comics. Maybe too many comics. I mean, it is possible”¦ theoretically. Naturally, we look forward to some more than others. I mean, who doesn’t? So, let’s take a look into the depths of our pull lists, grab some comics, and we’ll let YOU know what the top books to look forward to are for the week of October 14, 2015. Single issues and trades, they’re all here.

This is a week with a lot of prestige books by some of the greatest creators working in comics from a lot of different companies. This is a very good week for new releases, with a couple of titles that are shoe-ins to win some major awards next year. And there are plenty of other great books, including plenty of new Marvel titles, but we can only cover so many. So let’s get to telling you about some spectacular picks on The GoD List!

Henchman 21

Two Brothers by Garbiel Ba

Two Brothers (Dark Horse Comics – $24.99) Daytripper by Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon is one of the best comics of the last five years, and while they’ve both worked on other stuff since Daytripper came out, Two Brothers is their first major collaboration since its release. Two Brothers is another one of their trademark human stories about, well, two brothers. Omar and Yaqub are two young Brazilians that are separated after a violent fight. Yaqub is sent to live in Lebanon with relatives, but returns home five years later, only to find that all his familial problems remain. Ba and Moon’s work tends be very personal, always poignant, and just heartfelt in a way you don’t see in a lot of comics. One of my favorite things about Moon and Ba’s work is the common setting of their Brazilian homeland. Every story drips with passion for their home and they do a fantastic job of transporting the reader into that place. Their work is a great look into a different culture and I love the sense of place that they infuse into every page. Ba and Moon have become a team whose work is always top notch and is worth buying every time. Two Brothers is a fantastic example of comics as art that everyone should read.

Batman Year 100 Deluxe Hardcover (DC Comics – $29.99) If you’ve never read Paul Pope’s Batman Year 100 before, just know that this is a very different kind of Batman story, thanks largely to Pope’s unique style. Batman Year 100 is set in the year 2039, as a mysterious new Batman makes his mark on an all too familiar Gotham with the same old corruption that has always plagues the city. Batman Year 100 is distinctly Pope, with his singular art style and a vision of the future that has carried through much of his work. This is still very much a Batman story, with a solitary hero fighting a corrupt system with the help of a few friends and some handy gear. This new edition has some never published sketch pages, so there may be a reason to buy it again if you already own it, and Batman Year 100 is a book everyone should own.

East of West #21 (Image Comics – $3.50) I know it’s not possible, but I just want an issue of East of West to come out every week. I love the world that writer Jonathan Hickman has created. I adore the art by Nick Dragotta. The colors by Frank Martin are sublime. East of West is just the perfect comic; a fascinating alternate future that mixes western, sci-fi and the apocalypse and I just want it to come out more often. Is that too much to ask?

Twilight Children #1 (of 4) (DC/Vertigo Comics – $4.99) Now, if I had my druthers, and I always want my druthers, I’d prefer if Darwyn Cooke was working on the next Parker graphic novel for IDW. However, if he’s not going to be working on that I’ll have to deal with him teaming up with comics legend Gilbert Hernandez (Love and Rockets) to create Twilight Children, a story about aliens and shadowy government agents. Since this is written by Hernandez, you know this will be about more than just the premise as he is a master storyteller of the highest order. Then you’ve got the art from Cooke, whose bright, animated style stands alone. Twilight Children is simply a comic made by two of the best creators who have ever worked in the medium.

Chewbacca #1 cover

Empress Eve

Chewbacca #1 (of 5) (Marvel Comics – $3.99) Darth Vader has his own series, Princess Leia has her own series, and even Lando got his own series! But, now, Chewbacca — a fellow of few words — is finally getting the spotlight! Chewbecca #1 launches a new 5-issue miniseries that follows Han Solo’s sidekick and co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon soon after the events of the Battle of Yavin (which was the winning space battle at the end of the original Star Wars movie, for those of you not familiar with the official name). The story finds the heroic Wookiee crash-landed and stranded solo on an Imperial-occupied planet, where he must both help a “feisty” young girl, as well as try to reunite with his cohorts of the Rebellion.
