Rumor: Marvel Studios Secures Rights To ‘Fantastic Four’ From Fox
  |  @   |

This past summer, Fox attempted to revive Fantastic Four with a bold new vision. Starring a young diverse cast consisting of Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, and Michael B. Jordan, the film would be directed by Josh Trank, but a number of behind-the-scenes problems revealed that it was a troubled shoot. It wasn’t so much of “creative differences” that fueled the conflict, but the shocking allegations of “combative and abusive behavior” by the director, along with Trank reportedly trying to control what the cast could say during the film’s press day, not to mention that he had no faith in the film whatsoever.

In the end, the Fantastic Four reboot tanked at the box office and was widely panned by both critics and audiences, in such a way that it gave hope to the idea that the rights to Marvel’s first family may revert back to Marvel Studios. And that seems to be the case, as a hot rumor says Marvel has struck a deal with Fox to get the rights back to Fantastic Four. More on the story here below.

Den Of Geek has heard that Marvel inked a deal with Fox to acquire the film rights to Fantastic Four, and that a new film could be released as early as 2020. Fox has tried three times to build a successful franchise around the superhero team, with the first two attempts producing mediocre results at best, and the last and most recent one being one of the worst films of the year.

This latest acquisition, if true, comes a little more than a year after Marvel and Sony struck a deal to share Spider-Man so that the webslinger would be allowed to play in the MCU. However, the two Spider-Man film franchises by Sony still grossed more at the box office than the Fantastic Four franchises, and with the kind of earnings that the former produced, it’s easy to see why Sony may have wanted to “share” Spider-Man rather than let him go, as opposed to Fox, where Fantastic Four just couldn’t meet expectations.

Den of Geek is quick to say that they don’t have the “independent source to back this claim up,” so for now we will have to take the news with a huge grain of salt, especially because Simon Kinberg is “really focused” on getting a Fantastic Four sequel off the ground.

Using Days of Future Past as a foundation, X-Men: Apocalypse would help reboot the film franchise by introducing younger actors to play the same characters of the previous franchise. The idea was that there could potentially be a crossover, but only if the Fantastic Four reboot was successful.

If the rumor is true, the site says that it will only happened because of Marvel and Fox are working together on the X-Men TV shows HellFire and Legion. And because of that, it looks like Fox is willing to give up one of their weaker Marvel properties so that they can build upon their successful one. Not that it’s a problem. Fox also let the rights to DareDevil expire, which Marvel then reacquired, which eventually led them to their hit show on Netflix.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted on the news as it develops.

UPDATE: Fox and Marvel have both denied the rumor. Fox reportedly said the rumor is “completely untrue,” and Marvel also denied the initial report. So, while the rumor is not confirmed, that doesn’t mean there’s not something in the works. But, for now, Fantastic Four is still with Fox.
