Are you tired of hunting boring old animals? Do you need some bigger game? Have you always wanted to travel back in time to Pangea? Do you yearn for some prehistoric adventure? Then let Steve White‘s Dinosaur Hunter: The Ultimate Guide To The Biggest Game be your handbook when bagging a 50-foot Spinosauraus. But beware of the Rugops, native to The Bahariya Formation during the Late Cretaceous Period!
This guide is broken up into 6 parts. There is the introduction, which includes a 2 1/2-page supply list, gun descriptions, and how you and your partner will be monitored and picked up for safety. The other 5 parts are in-depth descriptions of each available hunting zone in their own time periods, ranging from the Late Triassic (225-210 million years ago) to the Late Cretaceous (66-65 million years ago). Each “formation” section has the climate, the dinosaurs and other fauna that inhabit the area (and their habits), the terrain, and complete descriptions of the allowable targets. Each section ends with a piece of memoir of a past hunter. There’s always a horribly violent lesson in these. They want to be clear of the danger.
I like how thorough this fictional guide is, even making mention of the fact that the butterfly effect is not real – killing one dinosaur will not cause an earthquake and possum extinction in 2025.
The illustrations are gorgeous and numerous throughout.
This guide, for all the dangers presented in both the warnings and in the anecdotals, makes me think that I could survive such a hunt. That is… if I could get over my bug and sweat aversion.
Very enjoyable, yet dense. This is not a light read, but the informational section contrasts nicely with the memoir excerpts, that could easily fit in with any Jurassic Park movie.
If you like your fiction disguised as non-fiction, and enjoy time-traveling dinosaur hunting, I think you’ve found your next read.
