‘Monopoly’ Origins Movie In The Works
  |  @   |

Hollywood adapting board games into feature films isn’t exactly a new practice, but it’s one that has hardly been used. We’ve recently seen films based on popular board games like Battleship and Ouija. So it only makes sense that a film based on Monopoly would be in the works. Ridley Scott was actually attached to direct the film over at Universal, but plans fell through, and then Lionsgate picked up the rights with Andrew Niccol set to write the script, and has been in development since 2009.

While the development of that film has been slow going, it appears another Monopoly-related film, separate from the one over at Lionsgate, has picked up some steam. According to a new report, the producer of Little Miss Sunshine is now attached to work on the origins of the board game. More on the story below.

According to a report from Variety, Big Beach’s Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf are producing an adaptation of Mary Pilon‘s book The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury and the Scandal Behind the World’s Favorite Board Game. The film will also use Ralph Anspach‘s book The Billion Dollar Monopoly Swindle, as a source.

Howard A. Rodman, the president of the Writers Guild of America West, has been hired to write the script.

On the surface, it looks like Hollywood is running out of ideas. But seeing how films like The Other Guys and The Big Short gives us an entertaining look at Ponzi schemes the results of betting against the market, this Monopoly origins story could work. Though the source materials that are being used to script, it looks like the film won’t be for a wide-audience. I mean, when you look at the heart of Monopoly, the point of the Elizabeth J. Magie Phillips‘s game was to illustrate the negative impact of what a monopoly could do to you and your finances. Not exactly something you get together with your family for on game night.

Here’s a brief description of Pilon’s book via Amazon:

The Monopolists reveals the unknown story of how Monopoly came into existence, the reinvention of its history by Parker Brothers and multiple media outlets, the lost female originator of the game, and one man’s lifelong obsession to tell the true story about the game’s questionable origins.

Anspach’s book recounts the invention of Anti-Monopoly.

No word yet on who may direct and who will star in the film, but we will be sure to keep you up to date on an updates surrounding the film.
