Guillermo del Toro Says He’s Turned In ‘Pacific Rim 2’ Script & Budget
  |  @   |

Despite Universal putting Pacific Rim 2 on an indefinite hold, director Guillermo del Toro was optimistic that the film would go into production once he turned in a script and a budget. Now, the Crimson Peak director has done just that. According to his most recent Twitter update, he has submitted a script and a budget. More on the story here below.

While del Toro was happy to announce that all the necessary things have been turned in, he said he got no answer. Of course, Universal is probably looking over everything before they come to a decision. Here is his official tweet,

He promises to inform his fans on the decision of Pacific Rim 2 when it comes in. Since there is no real time table on that, we will just have to wait.

What we do know is that Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange) wrote the most recent draft of the script. We know that Charlie Hunnam (Crimson Peak) and Rinko Kikuchi (The Brothers Bloom) are set to reprise their roles from the first film. Del Toro said he would like to see Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams control a jaeger if Pacific Rim 2 ever got greenlit. So at least we are one step closer to that.

But Universal is the one that will make the decision. While fans may be enough to green light a sequel, there are other factors to consider before the studio gives the go ahead. For one thing, Pacific Rim grossed only $101 million at the box office, against the $303 million overseas, most of that coming from China. While $411 million worldwide is a great number, those weak U.S. numbers, combined with a high $190 million production cost, are all the more reason for any studio to be hesitant about making the sequel.

However, Universal remains adamant that they will be making Pacific Rim 2 with Legendary Pictures.

“Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

Of course that doesn’t mean they will just give the green light now that del Toro has turned in a script. But it shows that the filmmaker won’t give up, even when the odds are stacked against time. And even if he doesn’t get the green light for Pacific Rim 2, there are other films like Silver and a smaller untitled English-language film we can look forward to.

Are you hoping that Universal gives the thumbs up for Pacific Rim 2?
