Neill Blomkamp’s ‘Alien’ Sequel On Hold Pending ‘Prometheus 2’

When Ridley Scott announced that Prometheus 2 would actually be Alien: Paradise Lost, there were a few wondering what would be happening to Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5. After all Sigourney Weaver did sign on for at least two Alien films, and the actress did speak about the film that would have been a genetic sibling to the first two Alien films. Not to mention Blomkamp recently confirmed that the pulse rifle would be making a return.
But there were rumors that Scott insisted that Prometheus 2 (which is what it was called at the time) be made first. This essentially would have delayed Blomkamp’s Alien 5, giving more time to the director to work on his script. Now that rumor is starting to look more like a reality as Blomkamp has confirmed that his Alien 5 has been delayed indefinitely. More on the story here below.
Here’s Blomkamp confirming the bad news over his official Twitter account, stating that the project is “kinda holding/ pending prometheus 2.”
alien is kinda holding/ pending prometheus 2. So I shall be working on other things… as much as I love the xeno- and Lt ripley
Now, that Twitter account is unverified, so it could be that the person tweeting is not Blomkamp. However, those same Alien 5 concept art pieces originated from an Instagram account that was linked to this Twitter account. But let’s just take the news with a grain of salt. If it is true, it is not entirely surprising news considering how Scott and FOX are fast-tracking Alien: Paradise Lost, especially since Scott’s The Martian was such a hit.
Back in August, there was a rumor that FOX was still interested in producing an Alien 5, but that Scott insisted on Prometheus 2 being made first.
“Alien 5 is still very much in the works, as Fox remains hot on the idea. Blomkamp continues to work on the script (only an outline existed previously) and refine the tale he is telling. Ridley Scott is still producing, but has insisted on Prometheus 2 being made first.”
Since then, the title has changed from Prometheus 2 to Alien: Paradise Lost, leading some of us to believe that this will be more of an Alien film with Prometheus characters in them. What the tweet does tell us is that Alien 5 was stuck in development for quite some time. We don’t even know if he has turned in a script yet. So this holding pattern suggests that he may come back to do Alien 5, or just quit on the project all together.
But it’s not as if Blomkamp will be waiting beside the phone for an answer. As the tweet says, he will be “working on other things.” What those things are remains unknown. He is coming off of two flops, Chappie and Elysium, so let’s just cross our fingers that he returns to do something more along the lines of District 9.
Do you think we will ever see Blomkamp’s vision of Alien?
Alien: Paradise Lost is expected to begin filming in February for a 2017 release.
