Last week on Once Upon A Time, there were a few reveals. A long long time ago, The Dark One of that time killed Merlin’s (Elliot Knight) love, and turned him into a tree using his heartbreak tear. All this Emma (Jennifer Morrison) sees through her Dreamcatcher in flashback Camelot, alerting Regina (Lana Parilla), who decides to relive her Daniel/Cora heartbreak. Unfortunately (or fortunately) that break is too healed to be effective. Violet rejects Henry (Jared Gilmore), but we (and Henry and Robin and Regina) found out that Emma took Violet’s heart and made her do it, to capture a genuine tear from Henry. She did break the spell that was on her parents, so bad mother/good daughter. Merida (Amy Manson) is trying to teach Rumple (Robert Carlyle) to be brave so he can be the hero that pulls the sword from the stone.

Spoilers from tonight’s episode below.

Once Upon A Time 5.6 “The Bear And The Bow” review: The title of the episode gives away its center for anyone who has seen Brave. It’s a Merida episode!

In 6-weeks ago Camelot: The Storybrooke crew plus Merlin bust Lancelot and Merida out of the clink. We see the Merida storyline play out, as she uses just her bravery to prove to the clansmen that she is a queen, by saving her brothers with some archery skills. Belle (Emilie de Ravin) is her bestie here.

In present-day Storybrooke: Belle and Rumple find each other and run with each other to hide from Merida. Emma heart commanded her to kill Belle to force Rumple to be a hero. Rumple tries to run away in a panic, but when Merida turns into a bear, he comes through for his lady love.

The amnesiacs find out once again, that Arthur (Liam Garrigan) is hiding treachery when he tries to destroy the Crimson Crown. Luckily, they still have the author. Unluckily, Merlin left a “if you are watching this, that means…” magical message, which does not bode well for his fate.

Emma tries to make a deal with Zelena (Rebecca Mader), who turns her down. Why? Who cares? Mader steals every scene she’s in. I like the no judgment/judgement on the part of both ladies.

Rumple pulls the sword from the stone. Does this make him King of Camelot now?

I liked this episode, but I felt I needed a little more reveal in it. The flashbacks are supposed to make sense of the present-day, and in some cases they do. But Merida’s flashback story seemed unnecessary, given that neither her nor Belle remembered how they helped each other. Last week’s Violet/Henry/Emma story was very connected in both timelines. This one was not like that. Plus, not a lot of Colin O’Donoghue.

Once Upon A Time airs Sunday nights at 8pm ET on ABC.

ABC’s synopsis:

In a Camelot flashback, a chance encounter with Merlin, David, Hook and Belle gives Merida new hope in her quest to save her brothers from the usurping clans of DunBroch. Unwilling to leave anything up to fate, Merida brings Belle along on a dangerous journey that culminates with an invaluable lesson in bravery. In Storybrooke, Regina, Mary Margaret and David discover the spell that would allow one of Merlin’s chosen to communicate with him, but when Arthur fails to reach the missing sorcerer the heroes grow suspicious. Meanwhile, Emma commands Merida to kill Belle in hopes of forcing Mr. Gold’s heroic transformation. With Merida unable to disobey Emma’s orders.
