Last week on Supergirl, we got a faster-than-a-speeding-bullet backstory, which included Superman’s older cousin Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), sent to Earth to protect him. On that journey, she got lost in The Phantom Zone. Now the younger cousin, HE helps her. She is adopted into a family including parents (Dean Cain and Helen Slater), and older sister Alex (Chyler Leigh). Kara works as an assistant to Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) who runs CatCo, a media giant. James Olsen (Mechad Brooks) is sent by Superman to watch out for Kara, and she outs herself to her friend, Winn (Jeremy Jordan), who makes her costume. Kara decides to give in to her legacy, after saving a doomed plane that her sister was on, and liking that heroic feeling. She discovers her sister is part of a covert government team, the DEO, who is tracking the criminals that escaped from The Phantom Zone along with Kara. The criminals all want revenge on their jailor’s daughter.

Spoilers below.

Supergirl 1.2 “Stronger Together” review: Supergirl is getting her sealegs. She’s a bit more klutzy Greatest American Hero than Superman. She saves a tanker from exploding, but then spills oil into the water, deeming her an “eco-terrorist.”

They’ve already added a feminist Obi-Wan kindness layer to Cat, having her give good advice to Kara as if she were Supergirl. As if! This just upped Flockhart’s already awesome character, to the danger zone of becoming everyone’s favorite.

After a literal fight with her sister (aided by a Kryptonite handicap), Kara learned her lesson, so asks her friends, James and Wynn, to help her learn. What follows is a Rocky-like montage of rescue, to the tune of Joan Jett’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.” Oh, it makes you smile.

Cat threatens James’s job if he does not get her an interview with Supergirl. All he’s ever wanted was to step outside of the hero shadow, and thought this was his chance. Kara agrees to the interview and gives James a lesson in being “stronger together.” I completely believe that Cat will find out about Kara sooner than later.

Kara’s aunt, General Astra (Laura Benanti), abducts Alex as bait. There is a knock down drag em out fight between powerful Kryptonians. You can see both ladies play several emotions as the love and anger shines through. Astra really believes in whatever her intention is. That is not exactly clear yet, but it must involve killing humans since Supergirl is against it.

Alex reveals Kara’s own “Fortress of Solitude.” This will help serve as it did in Superman, the emotional pull of a life and world lost.

Hank Henshaw (David Harewood) is hiding something.

This show is cute. I enjoyed every little scene. The “meta” (I cannot stop calling them that) was pretty scary, almost “Strain”-like, a reluctant minion to Kara’a evil aunt.

Supergirl airs Monday nights at 8pm ET on CBS.

CBS synopsis:

“Stronger Together” — When Kara’s (Melissa Benoist, right) attempts to help National City don’t go according to plan, she must put aside the doubts that she — and the city’s media — has about her abilities in order to capture an escapee from the Kryptonian prison, Fort Rozz. Also, Cat pressures James ((Mehcad Brooks, left) to use his connection to Superman to get her an interview with Supergirl, when SUPERGIRL moves to its regular time period, Monday, Nov. 2 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
