Last week Chanel #2 (Ariana Grande) returned from the dead, thanks to a Ouija board that helped Chanel (Emma Roberts) avoid murder at the hands of the… Chanels. Phew, it’s always confusing dealing with that crew. Chanel tries to focus on the “real enemies,” Zayday and Grace… after all, all this craziness and murder started once they got here right? We found out that Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) is even crazier than we imagined, having murdered her ex-husband and framed the preppy college girl who took him from her. In fact, Chanel AND Munsch have now killed people, and aren’t even in consideration for the killer on the show. We know that Gigi (Nasim Pedrad) is pulling the strings, but who is in the Devil suit… or suits?

Spoilers below.

We get an immediate homage to Jaws AGAIN (I’m not complaining, it’s my favorite movie) as Grace (Skyler Samuels) plays the Hooper to Munsch’s Mayor Vaughn, with a “You’re gonna ignore this problem till it bites you in the ass/stabs you in the heart” line. Then of course, we get the homage of homages… Jamie Lee Curtis in the shower ala her mom Janet Leigh in Psycho. Except this time victim fights back; “I’ve seen that movie 50 times!” What follows is an absolutely absurd 3-1 fight between Munsch, and the two Devils, and a third villain dressed as… Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia!?!?

Chanel holds court to discuss the guilt of Zayday (Keke Palmer) and Grace. Chanel #6 (Lea Michele) has the evidence; they’re on the same birth control pill cycle… “Those who pill together, kill together!” Security Guard Denise (Niecy Nash) moved into Kappa House and is offered a chance to earn the largest amount of money she can imagine ($3 million) by Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd) to prove Zayday is guilty. Grace goes back to Munsch and gets the name of the dead girl in the tub from 20 years earlier. Meanwhile back at Kappa, Jennifer (Breezy Eslin) is murdered during her candle blog via a Red Devil knife to the head”¦ right after drawing the ire of Zayday. She is found by the Chanels, a living, dripping candle.

Grace and Pete (Diego Boneta) follow Munsch’s lead back to the insane asylum where crazy painting lady gives them clues that finger Gigi’s involvement as well as the big reveal; albeit a cliche one, twin babies”¦ cue the “Ooooh, that’s why two Red Devils”. In the wake of another murder, Munsch is left with no options but to shut campus down, which of course is a disaster for Chanel whose popularity and relationship with Chad Radwell depend on campus being open and Kappa House thriving. I need to start a drinking game where I take a drink whenever Chanel brutally mocks someone else’s appearance, status, or social class. It would have to be sips of light beer otherwise I’d be dead from alcohol poisoning within the first third of an episode.

When Grace challenges Gigi, Gigi goes after her emotionally, and plays the “no mommy” card. Gigi is also now engaged to Wes (Oliver Hudson). Chanel gets Scotland Yard (!!!) involved in the investigation, and they turn up dirt on Grace’s mom, long thought gone. Grace’s conversation with her dad about Gigi leads her to think her dad may be involved. Chanel corners her with the evidence about her mom, which is actually really not funny, but more sad. In short, Mom’s college fun led to an unexpected pregnancy, and a short life of drugs, alcohol, and death.

Finally, Boone (Nick Jonas) is back. Dressed in a horrible wig and fake beard, people at the gym think he looks like Joaquin Phoenix. Who is he on the phone with? We all knew he was one of the Red Devils, the question is now who the other one is… probably a girl based on the painting. Hester/Chanel #6 or Manson’s daughter, Chanel #3 both fit the bill. Chanel #5 (Abigail Breslin) may have had both her suitors killed off to throw off the scent. Bottom line, they think Gigi is the weak link, and it’s time to dispose of the weak link.

Scream Queens was not as laugh out loud funny this week. They went a little heavyhanded on the mommy issues that Grace is having, which I guess I should’ve suspected based on the episode title. But whenever Emma Roberts or Jamie Lee Curtis are on the screen it more than makes up for it. Emma Roberts is so good. I can’t think of any more adjectives to describe her performance. The plot and backstory are coming together, and with only 4 episodes left, everything will piece together soon. And, please… MORE CHAD RADWELL!!!

Scream Queens returns with a new episode next Tuesday night at 9:00pm on FOX.
