Since Stephen Colbert took over The Late Show from David Letterman, the satirist has spent much of his time continuing what he did over on Comedy Central, mocking the politics of the day. He has worked hard to get as many hopeful Presidential candidates on his show as possible. So it was a pleasant surprise to see on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert guest list on Tuesday night, November 10, was the stars of my favorite new show of the season: Ash vs Evil Dead, Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless.
Check out some of that interview, plus bonus clip of Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless giving acting tips here below.
Campbell, as he so often does, appeared in a purple smoking jacket escorting Lawless, who was wearing a flattering white dress. Colbert immediately commented on how good they looked when they are so usually drenched in blood on the TV show. When asked about exactly how much blood is spilled, Campbell claimed it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 450 gallons, although he’d bet on much more. He discussed the differences in blood flow from 1979 when they made the first film, and blood was shot of a green watering hose by a guy blowing on the other end. Now, they have “viscera cannons” and as Colbert called it “blood on tap” from pressurized beer kegs.
On the show, Campbell plays the titular hero Ash who has mistakenly reawakened Deadites by reading from the Necronomicon. Lawless plays Ruby, the daughter of the archaeologist who 30-plus years ago originally found and read from the book in the Evil Dead films. They showed a clip of Ruby and Ash arguing in the woods, of course covered in blood. She challenges his accomplishments and mocks his chainsaw-attached stump. “How many people do you know with a fully functioning chainsaw arm!?” he replied.
Colbert asked if they ever get really hurt doing the stunts. Lawless said all the time. Campbell relayed a story from Army of Darkness, the third film, where he cut his face open on a piece of armor, drove himself to the hospital, and the doctor couldn’t tell which was the real cut with seven other makeup injuries on his face. Colbert laughed and said the makeup department must’ve felt good.
Lawless encouraged Campbell to put on his glasses because of his shocking resemblance to Stephen Colbert with them on. Campbell and Colbert switched seats and the imitation was freakishly dead-on. All in all, this was as fun a 5-minute interview you can get on late night TV, and the crowd reacted very positively to the B-movie superstars.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is on nightly during the week at 11:35 PM on CBS. Ash vs Evil Dead is on Saturday nights at 9 PM on Starz. You can see the interview by looking up “Late Show” on CBS.
Bruce Campbell & Lucy Lawless Agree To Disagree
The stars of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” have a slight disagreement about who caused all the trouble with the Deadites.
Bruce Campbell Takes Over
Lucy Lawless thinks Bruce Campbell looks just like Stephen when he has his glasses on. To test the theory, Bruce took over Stephen’s desk.
