‘Tomb Raider’ Movie Reboot Finds A Director
  |  @   |

The planned reboot of the Tomb Raider movie franchise has found itself a director. It’s being reported that Norwegian director Roar Uthaug has been set to helm the movie for GK Films, MGM and Warner Brothers. Uthaug’s previous credits include Cold Prey, Magic Silver, Escape, and The Wave, which was good enough to be chosen as Norway’s submission to be considered for a Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award nomination.

The project is also looking at a new writer. Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the writer behind the Black List script titled Hibernation, is in negotiations to pen the latest draft of the screenplay.

Robertson-Dworet is one of the writers who has worked on the script for Transformers 5. Back in February it was reported that Snow White and the Huntsman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), and Divergent writer Evan Daugherty would be writing the script, but it’s unclear if his work will still be used or if the new writer will start from scratch. Other writers have also worked on the script, including Marti Noxon and Mark Fergus, and Hawk Ostby.

The reboot has been in development for over five years now. The rights to the property were once at Warner Bros. but they were unable to put together a product, and so the rights went back to Square Enix, the publisher of the video game series the movies are based on. GK Films then acquired the rights 2011, and developed the reboot for a couple of years before teaming up with MGM in 2013. Then earlier this year WB re-joined the party, bringing it all full circle.

The video game series was also rebooted fairly recently in 2013, simply titled Tomb Raider, and that game was considered by many to be among the top games of the year. A sequel was released just last week titled Rise of the Tomb Raider, which is available for Xbox One and Xbox 360.
