Chris Hemsworth Wants ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ To Be Just As Funny As ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

Thor: The Dark World Header

Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe saw Thor as a complete fish-out-of-water. The film, which was directed by Kenneth Branagh, can be considered the funniest of the Phase One. However, the sequel to the character’s solo franchise lived up to its title by taking a dark turn in Thor: The Dark World. The film still maintain its more fantastical aspects, but it was a little strange not to see Thor react strangely to human customs. And it seems that film star Chris Hemsworth agrees. Whether or not people would have been tired of that trope or if Marvel purposefully wanted The Dark World to lack humor is not clear. But what is clear is that some of the cast wants to bring the funny back.

In a new interview, the actor talks about how Thor: Ragnarok could use a “little dose” of Guardians of the Galaxy to bring back the humor and comedy that the first film was known for. Check out Hemsworth’s full comments on what he liked to see in the Thor sequel below.

Hemsworth spoke to Cinemablend, there he spoke highly of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, saying that it had “smart wit” and an “unexpected kind of humor” that the next Thor film could really use:

“I think [Thor: Ragnarok] needs to be injected with that sort of smart wit and unexpected kind of humor, kind of what James Gunn came in and did with Guardians [of the Galaxy]. It was like off center and unpredictable, and I think we can definitely use a dose of that, you know?”

Sure Thor: The Dark World is the darkest of the two films. But I find it would have been difficult to squeeze out the kind of comedy the first Thor had in the sequel. The narrative didn’t really call for that. Whereas, Thor: Ragnarok being a mystical journey could give way for some excellent banter, especially when it’s the Hulk who is on that journey with you. Just imagine all the love taps the two will give each other.

But Hemsworth admits that he did miss some of that genuinely fun humor in Thor: The Dark World:

“I feel we had less of the sort of the naivety or fun or humor that the first [Thor] might have had. I wish we had more of that in the second [movie]. “¦ We’ve done regal. We’ve done Shakespeare, and we’ve shown that. I think now it’s time to go, “˜Okay, cool. Let’s try something different,’ and Taika just had such a brilliant sort of take and funny kind of ideas about where we could [go], how we could do that.”

It should be interesting to see if What We Do in the Shadows‘ director Taika Waititi can add some funny into Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle‘s dark script. Waititi has been rumored to direct and do some editing on the script for quite some time, but neither Disney or Marvel Studios have confirmed that he is on board.

If Waititi is signed on to write and direct, hopefully he can find the comedy in a film that involves dark themes like the apocalypse.

Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to open November 3, 2017.
