Warning: Spoilers for Ash vs Evil Dead…
On Ash vs Evil Dead, Ash went on a Brujo-infused acid trip, which ended up looking like one a Bruce Campbell Old Spice commercial. His trip allows him to see things clearly”¦ like the fact that the demon Eligos has possessed Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo). Unfortunately, Brujo (Hemky Madera) and Pablo (Ray Santiago) think it’s the reverse and knock Ash out, tying him up for an exorcism. As this is going on at Brujo’s, Ruby (Lucy Lawless) and Fisher (Jill Marie Jones) are in hot pursuit with a secret weapon pointing them in the right direction: Ash’s original severed demon hand!
Possessed Kelly is FUN. What is it about girls when they get possessed? They always get much hotter! Give it to Dana DeLorenzo for totally having fun with this, seducing poor Pablo with booze and weed. She’s using Ash’s shotgun as a bong”¦ “Don’t worry, it’s not loaded, but I am.” She tells him if he takes a shot (as she sneaks a shell in the chamber), he can kiss her anywhere”¦ he offers the forehead. Pablo is adorable! She inevitably gets bored and Demon Kelly attacks. Ash survives his attempted exorcism and they wrap Kelly up for her turn.
The whole Demon Kelly exorcism scene is so reminiscent of Ash and girlfriend Linda in the original Evil Dead films. And what exorcism would be complete without some pea soup vomit?! Kelly tells Ash to let her go, to kill her, and put a cross on her grave. Ash’s response:
“Kelly’s Jewish, F*CK YOU!”
When Pablo finally coaxes Eligos out of Kelly it leads to a final showdown, especially for Brujo, who gets impaled for his trouble. Ash takes advice from his own trip”¦ “Shoot first, think never” and that spells a gooey end to Eligos. Brujo is laid to rest and Ash has a moment of regret and repentance back in the RV. Through his interactions, Kelly’s Dad and now Pablo’s Brujo are dead. He recognizes how much he needs them, more so after Pablo gives him his new mechanized hand, capable of making fists and giving fingers!
I loved this episode because it was a break from what we have seen over the first 4 episodes. Usually we get gore galore and tons of quick witted Ash-isms. This was more a straightforward horror episode and a real coming out party for DeLorenzo. Also, the soundtrack this week was perfect, with a Ennio Morricone-esque score and some classic 70’s rock mixed in. I cannot wait for what is coming. In the previews for next week, Ash says all roads lead back to where it started”¦ which means we’re heading for the cabin, and the inevitable confrontation with Ruby and Fisher. Campbell is a rock in this environment; when the demon vomit misses him, he seems genuinely pissed off. And when he does get a chance to speak, the dialogue just sounds so epically B-movie awesome. (About his hand)… “I’m gonna shove this up some deadite’s ass!”
Ash vs Evil Dead returns next Saturday at 9pm ET on Starz.
