The History Channel’s Vikings returns for its 4th season in early 2016, but fear not Ragnar fans! Chronicle Books has released a gorgeous companion book to the hit series, The World of Vikings by Justin Pollard. Including a foreword (and afterword) by show creator Michael Hirst, this 160-page beauty has incredible photographs from all three seasons, and combines the history with the fiction behind this popular world.

More below.

This breathtaking acquisition goes through the research behind the costumes, hairstyles, quarters, and battle scenes of the series. You also get a page or two on each character, from Ragnar to Athelstan to King Ecbert to Floki. Every character is based on an actual historical figure, or blending of, and while Vikings is fictional, the attention to detail is why this world seems so authentic.

This lovely book has interviews from all of the cast and crew, who shared how they felt during certain scenes or moments. One thing I noticed is how appreciative everyone is of being a part of this series. You can tell how much they believe in their characters and their story.

Some tidbits:

George Blagden (Athelstan) went on a research trip to see the devout way of monk life.

– Both Gustaf Skarsgard (Floki) and Travis Fimmel (Ragnar) would keep their boats of they could.

– Joan Bergin, costume designer, says it is “tempting to leave him (Clive Standen – Rollo) minus it (his shirt) the entire series.”

There is so much more!

The World of Vikings is an excellent piece for the avid Vikings fan. I highly recommend it.

Official book synopsis:

MGM’s hit show Vikings on the History Channel has drawn millions of viewers into the fascinating and bloody world of legendary Norse hero Ragnar Lothbrok, who led Viking warriors to the British Isles and France. Covering the first three seasons of the series, this official companion book delves into the real history as well as the behind-the-scenes stories. Viking historian Justin Pollard explains shipbuilding and navigation, Norse culture and religion, and the first encounters between Viking warriors and the kings of England and France. Interviews with cast and crew reveal the process of dramatizing this gripping story, from reviving the Old Norse language to choreographing battle scenes and building ancient temples for human sacrifice. This spectacular package is a must for fans of the show and history buffs alike.

The History Channel TV show official synopsis:

VIKINGS follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok, an actual historical figure, and the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the gripping sagas of Ragnar’s band of Viking brothers and his family, as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods – legend has it that he was a direct descendent of Odin, the god of war and warriors.
