Defenders Crossover With Avengers In ‘Infinity War’ Unlikely

With the Marvel Cinematic Universe being as expansive as it is, there is more then plenty of room for characters from other films to cross over into the TV side. We saw a little bit of that in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Lady Sif and Nick Fury, but rarely do the characters from the TV world ever make an appearance in the films. Now with the MCU expanding its TV series with four new titles (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist) that will culminate into a Defenders miniseries as a part of the Netflix deal, there has been growing expectations for the Marvel Television series of ABC Studios and Netflix to leap to the big screen.
Of course that would be a delight for fans for any number of reasons, but just giving everyone from all those series the right amount of screentime would be a tall order. And that’s where Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War co-director Anthony Russo comes in. As much as we would all like to see a crossover of that magnitude happen, the director says that we shouldn’t get our hopes up. More on the story below.
Anthony Russo made a stop at CCXP, the hugely popular Comic-Con held in São Paulo, Brazil. While there, he was asked about the possibility if a crossover with the films, ABC Studios, and Netflix could ever happen. Here’s what he had to say:
It’s complicated. When we start to serialize the telling of stories it’s difficult. You have to have a lot of control and focus on the course of history. The films are controlled by a group led by Kevin Feige, so they function as a unit. Other products, even if they are from Marvel, are controlled by others. Then there is the possibility of a crossover, but it’s more complicated. It is a smaller scale version of the problem that exists when remembering that Fox holds the rights to some of Marvel’s most popular characters, as does Sony and others. As storytellers, we only have control over what happens in Marvel movies, but everything is possible, Spider-Man (whose rights were held by Sony) became possible!
That pretty much confirms that the crossover that everyone wants to see, will not happen. But the director is able to keep a glimmer of hope alive by reminding everyone that Marvel and Sony were able to work out a deal to share Spider-Man.
Part of that complication may also be from the animosity between Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Marvel Entertainment President Ike Perlmutter. The split between the two resulted in Feige gaining more control over Marvel Studios while Perlmutter would oversee Marvel Television. So even though everything in the MCU is a part of the shared universe, the clash between these two heads could result in the two worlds never crossing over.
But the fact that Russo is open to the idea still despite the divide between film and TV proves to us that it still can happen. Avengers: Infinity War Part I opens on May 4, 2018, with Avengers: Infinity War Part II opening in theaters on May 3, 2019.
